Grateful Dead on iTMS

The Grateful Dead is to make every live note they've ever recorded available for download, according to Rocky Mountain News: "'The band has recorded all of its live shows since the late '60s, at first 'just so we could listen back, see what it sounded like and make any changes.'...And compared to most music at iTunes, the Dead's jams are a bargain, he says with a laugh. 'At 99 cents a tune, it's a pretty decent price, because most of our tunes are pretty long.'"

soundboard recordings?

the recording quality must be better... free ones are AUDs, right? plus, you dont' have to spend the time hunting them down.

very cool

I sorta like the Dead, but I wouldn't call myself a fan by any means. But I can see myself picking up a show that has a really spaced-out Dark Star, cuz I dig it.

This is a win for iTunes, in that it is expanding into different areas that a traditional music store wouldn't delve into.

And as for the sound quality -- I can only imagine that even at 128 AAC, these shows will sound a lot better than the concert DAT recordings copied to analog tape, and then copies of copies of copies of that tape float around, which most fans are listening to.

Quality

This is great news, but I'll probably stick with the stuff on etree.org - Many of those shows are from soundboard patches and are very low generation. When combined with the fact that there is no lossy compresison, and no gaps between songs (as one would have for iTMS), the stuff available from the trading community is easily worth the time to download.

I can see myself spending way more than I've got available if they make this deal! I just don't have the time or inclination to search around for the "shared" stuff... so I'd probably go the iTMS route... and then fast one day/week to pay for it all!

steve's got to go to them as a negotiator - sony/atv should do this in a heartbeat, and as for apple corps, it's a win-win - h***, if steve offered to do it at no profit and get them in the door, they get the best outlet to date for online music - which is how things are going to go... they need to get on the bandwagon

Best News Ever!!!!!

If this is true, it will be the most amazing thing to ever happen in the history of concert recordings.

My only concern is the rumor that the iPod cannot play a song directly after another, such as a CD can with a live concert recording so the "Music Never Stops..."

I heard that you have to 'stitch' all the live recordings together to listen to a non-stop live concert, which of course, is what listening to the GD is all all about...

Now I understand what is wrong with the Grateful Dead. They really think longer is better. Yawn.

I don't see this happening, anyway. Wouldn't it be thousands of hours? Let's see... do I want the concert from August 5, 1978 or August 7? What's the point?

Why do people want DVD sets of each season of "The Simpsons"? All the issues of "The Sandman"?
500+ sets of salt and pepper shakers?

People like to accumulate things. They like to collect things.

Each Grateful Dead show was different, so why not try to collect them all? Why begrudge somebody's desire to do so?

Besides, the Grateful Dead didn't play a show 8/5/78 nor did they play 8/7/78.

That argument would make sense if each season of The Simpsons had multiple takes the same episode/script, or if someone collected one specific model of shakers.

Hey, I don't care what people want to collect. I just don't see the point of iTMS--any music store--doubling their catalog for hundreds of nearly identical concerts. And it has absolutely nothing to with whether I like the Dead or think they really, really suck hard. And are boring.

Yes, I, too, think the Grateful Dead suck really, really hard and see no value to me personally in presently having available to me through iTunes their entire catalog of live performances. But my opinion has very little to do with the perceived value that this announcement could bring to iTunes. I may not like it but I know a friend of mine is going to have to clean up his exploded head for days after hearing this. Face it, it�s a good thing to have more exclusive c*** on iT. Even if you can get very similar material for free on deadbutstillstoned.org, perception of value is rarely based on facts and logic.

And it looks like JEB, that clever bot, has come up with his replacement for the R word. Oh well. So much for the theory that Mac users are smarter than the average user.

First, they'd do it because there's a demand. Check out gdstore.com. They sell a ton of live music on CD. Do you think they do that because they lose money on it? Check out any major label's catalog. There are a ton of releases that are "The Complete Recordings of...." Just because you don't like all of it doesn't mean that no one else will.

Second, it's inexpensive content. Apple will only have to pay the Grateful Dead organization, not Arista, Warner Bros. or some other label. The implication is that Apple would make more money on GD purchases than on other purchases.

Third, it will bring some new traffic and customers to iTMS. Exclusive content draws people (collectors, completists, the curious, etc.) who might then buy additional music or maybe even an iPod.

Fourth, it's not like it's a brick and mortar where the Grateful Dead music will take up space where other music could be stocked. The number of songs the iTMS could offer is virtually limitless. Adding the Grateful Dead music won't displace whatever it is that you like.

Finally, yeah, I took the time to check and see if they played the shows you mentioned. People who collect things can be obsessive. 500+ salt and pepper shakers all do the same thing: dispense salt and pepper. They just look different. Some Grateful Dead shows may have the same setlist, but they all sound different (at least to all who care to listen).

No one's asking you to buy any of their shows. Why complain about other consumers being able to?
