Napster CEO: Apple will buckle under AAC pressure

Napster expects AAC demise

In a lengthy discussion with The Guardian surrounding Napster's UK plans, CEO Chris Gorog : "The iPod is great if you're happy to only shop at one record store. It's like buying a car and finding you can only drive down one road. I think consumers, when they understand that, will be kind of pissed off." Napster employs Microsoft's WMA format, the only viable alternative that provides DRM support and has widespread playback support on most MP3 devices (but no the iPod).

    My prediction:

I predict that something I don't like will fail too. There's no news here.

    He doesn't get it.

The iPod also plays MP3 format, and it completely capable to playing WMA if they wanted it to. The iPod and iTunes is more than just buying all your music online, you can rip all the disks you own and put on it as well...with iTunes you can then burn back to CDs if you want to. He's assuming that you are aquiring all your music through iTunes music store, which simply isn't true. iTunes music store was put in place to sell iPods, Apple doesn't make that much money off the music store itself, and never planned to, they wanted to sell more iPods, and so far that seems to be working, especially with the mini's flying off the shelves the way they are.

    Very little competition

The big thing here is there is that ALL the online stores are offering basically the same thing. 99 cent songs, similar libraries, ect. There is little need to "shop around." So the competition arguement is moot. Sure I can buy from any number of windows WMA stores, but aside for shopping experience they are all the same. This would make a difference if I couldn't get Sony artists on iTunes, but I could on Napster.

    Why is this article even

I wanted to say these things but you-all beat me to it: Chris Gorog is clearly an unbiased sourc eof information, and the iPod also plays MP3.

That said I DO wish the Apple Store had more non-compilation albums and songs. If I wanted compilations I'd have bought 'em already. I want the real deal.

    one road?

How about it's more like buying a car from a dealership and then getting parts and service for that car where ever I want....

Jeez, and I don't even have a fancy MBA. What an idiot...

    hah

What Gorog seems to be forgetting is that the iPod is the #1 portable music player in the country, period. If the iPod can't play WMA, then people won't buy WMA, plain and simple. That would be like claiming that people buying a VHS VCR back in the '80s will be pissed off when they find out it doesn't play Beta tapes. And as someone else suggested, how many people really use portable music players for online music shopping, and how many just use them as an MP3 player (you remember MP3s, right?).
