CNN to use Mac laptops for news gathering

updated 08:09 pm EST, Wed January 17, 2001

Reader Bob Grip discovered a CNN internal memo posted on drudgereport.com that discusses cutback plans, including equipping news teams with Macintosh laptops. "We intend to accelerate our plans to introduce compact hi-tech newsgathering gear. Look for the quick introduction of small, high-quality DV cameras and laptop editing equipment (a Mac laptop), enabling us to deploy smaller reporting teams one or two people at times when it makes sense."

    PROMOTION!

Please, Steve, don't be an a**- give CNN a huge discount on PowerBooks w/ Final Cut Pro preloaded, and then ask for some commercial time in exchange!

    Re: promotion

LOL, you think CNN would give Apple air time for a few bucks off a PowerBook? Apple would have to GIVE them hundreds of PBs to get commercials... remember that at CNN (like most TV stations) they spend $20,000 on a single camcorder, for which the tapes are $35 each (my school has 3 of the "el-cheapo" $10,000 cameras, and about 200 of the $35 tapes). Studio cameras easily cost $100,000. Don't think that they're gonna worry about a $200 discount, that's peanuts to them!!! National networks like CNN can charge thousands of dollars per second for airtime, since they have huge viewership.

And in case you didn't know, TV programs' sole purpose is to keep you glued to the screen so you'll watch the commercials (from the mouths' of all of my media profs).

    This is true

My friend Jason just moved to Atlanta to be CNN's correspondant of sorts covering this sort of thing. I equipped him with a PBG3 and FCP whilst he was at MTV here in NYC, and CNN was so impressed with his on-the-road editing capabilities (which were truly one-man) that they hired him to run around the world and do this sort of thing. s**** the commercials-- this is exactly what Apple was supposed to be selling these PowerBooks for, and they shouldn't give a discount above what's normal for volume customers.

    CNN memo

I would tend to think this is true. Think of how often CNN has taken out a full page add in MacWorld in the last 17 years. This is exactly what they did in the latest issue stating they were transforming their website to be more Mac-friendly. I can't recall the exact page number but I think it was inside the first two dozen pages.

    The point really is...

(assuming this rumor is born out)
"Those that need to make their on-the-go staff as effective as possible ( and/or care to keep their personnel costs low) buy Macs! "
    What better testimonial angle!

I'd sooner take the word of the anonymous posters on this message board than of that pathetic rumor-monger drudge.
