Apple VP Jonathan Ive has been named the , according to BBC News: "Jonathan Ive, who designed the pocket-sized music player, beat the Harry Potter writer into second place. Golden Globe winner Gervais, the creator and star of The Office, came third in the list put together by a panel of culture experts."

Ive was just RIPE to be named by the BBC as the most influential person on British culture.
The fact is that an industrial designer could never be appreciated as a cultural icon in the USA, unless he/she had done something noteworthy in a more tacky realm of endeavor, like making/stealing/inheriting a lot of money; popularizing some vulgar form of behavior or appearance or novelty item; or feigning indignance and shock on a massive scale to something like a bared breast or copies of Huckleberry Finn. Of course, to totally win our admiration he/she would have to drive something equally as vulgar, like a black Escalade with shiny gold wheels and a flat screen TV for each passenger and a bumper sticker proclaiming "fu*k the environment!"
