Apple No. 5 in 2003
Apple finished 2003 as the No. 5 vendor in PC shipments with a US market share of 3.2% for 2003; however, it was not among the top 5 US vendors in the fourth quarter of 2003 or the top 5 vendors in worldwide sales during the entire 2003, according to IDC data. Apple last year shipped 1,675,000 units compared with 1,679,000 in 2002, a 0.2% decrease from the year ago compared with a 10.8% increase in the overall sales experienced by the industry. IDC reports that worldwide PC shipments grew 15.2% year-on-year to 44.6 million units.
Echoing sentiments revealed in Apple's , IDC said that strong growth in Europe and sustained notebook demand were key sources of growth and that on an annual basis, shipment growth moved into double digits for the first time since 2000. Shipments rose to a record 152.6 million on growth of 11.4%. However, Apple was not able to achieve the same type of growth throughout 2003. IDC said, "product refreshes in the fourth quarter helped lift growth to double digits [in the fourth quarter], but missed Apple's key third quarter client base and shipments were down a hair annually."
HP saw a 21% year-over-year increase in the fourth quarter of 2003, allowing it to capture the top PC vendor spot with 16.9% market share in the US. On HP's heels, Dell also achieved record volumes with 20% growth and captured 16.3% market share during the quarter. IBM, Fujitsu and Toshiba rounded out the top 5 PC vendors in the fourth quarter of 2003. The same 5 vendors rounded out the top 5 vendors in worldwide shipments in both Q4 2003 and overall 2003 shipments.

Let's see how many rabid anti-mac zealots can troll mac sites because they have nothing better to do and don't know what they are talking about. Gold star for you !
Apple has good products that fill a niche. PC and windows is not for everyone.
Why are so many insecure windows users always bashing Apple? Get a life guys. Go scan a virus.
I drive a Mitsubishi but I don't feel the need to taunt Toyota or Ford drivers.

Lower consumer prices

Apple need to produce competitive consumer systems at reasonable prices. The iMac is simply too expensive to be a truly mainstream system.

I really wonder who this fool thinks he is? I'll admit that there is usually a pro-Apple theme on this forum, but you would be a fool not to expect it dumbass.
That being said, I'm still holding out for a headless eMac!
Clue to Apple
I can't afford an iMac, I don't like the size/style of the eMac! Not everyone wants to spend $1000 for the lowest end hardware you have to offer!
Everyone wants a $500 - $600 system that they can use with their 3 year old (perfectly working) monitor (or along side their PC)!
Headless eMac
1GHz PowerPC G4
256MB SDRAM
40GB Ultra ATA drive
Combo drive
$599

the iMac is a work of art. It is form following function. If you want a cost effective Unix based computing solution with 10,000 apps and an intuitive GUI - you need only get an eMac.
Too many idiots out there....

Totally agree. Started out on the Mac with a Performa, upgraded to another but kept the same monitor, then got a 400Mhz iMac which runs Panther fine but slowly. I'd like to upgrade to run stuff like Garage Band but the iMac is just too expensive. A $600 basic system would be perfect. I'd make do with a generic 15" screen and save for a good LCD later. To save on development/manufacturing costs why can't they sell just an iMac base unit?

Been riding Harley's for near 35 years. Now, I could go buy one of those faster, cheaper Japanese imports that are so popular but it's not gonna happen. Now I don't suppose you're going to undertand that because you're a moron, but hey, work with what you got.
