    So much for Whirlwind

Remember when Macromedia showed off Whirlwind? I guess the development of that product was going so poorly they had to buy another company instead just like they did with Drumbeat!

    e-commerce?

Um .. Allaire is a far cry from an e-commerce company. ColdFusion, Spectra, HomeSite and Jrun are all software development and production applications in some way. This is a good thing for the development community, and certainly a good thing for Allaire and Macromedia. Allaire gets good leadership and great front-end tools, while Macromedia gets great back-end tools.

    whither php?

The first poster had it right. With Macromedia's acquisition of Allaire, the odds of seeing full PHP support in UltraDev have now dropped to just slightly more than zero.

    Dreamweaver + Homesite

We could see Dreamweaver step into a position that will be nearly impossible to challenge. Just think of Dreamweaver with Homesite as the HTML editing window. No competitors would be able to come even close to the power of a tool like that.

    Homesite for Mac?

What will be interesting to see is if down the road Homesite/CF Studio are released for the Mac. BBEdit has a loyal, installed base and would likely survive that move. But importantly to Apple, having Allaire's tools on the Mac will mean more sales of Mac computuers. Also, ColdFusion 5.0 will eventually be complete Java based -- which opens it up to running on the MacOS with some minor tweaking (currently CF runs on Intel-based machines in 4 unixs and, of Course Windows NT).

This is a good move. As for PHP, it's popular because it's free and more crossplatform friendly right now. Having Cold Fusion and Homesite, and possibly Spectra and JRun in the future, will lead to more choices for us and more Macs replacing Intel machines.

    Bravo!

    Cold Fusion Rocks

I'm a Mac web developer. The only tool I really need my PC for is
for ColdFusion. With this merger, I hope the Allaire group becomes more involved in the Mac community. For the un-initiated, ColdFusion is an incredible tool ... actually quite Mac-Like in its approach. I've seen ASP, Java, etc. ColdFusion beats them all, hands down, end of discussion. Bringing it into the Mac community would be a very popular (and profitable) move.

    Hrmm...

We are halfway through our first Lasso solution. When I told my boss of the merger this morning, he said, "Guess our database solutions will be changing sometime, huh?"

This really is a big deal for the Mac Web Crowd.
