Apple launches new science education site

A new Apple Web site that showcases the company's involvement in went live today, according to the company. The site features Virginia Tech's Power Mac G5 cluster supercomputer very prominently, which is ranked third most powerful in the world. "For 25 years, Apple has provided powerful tools to enable scientific discovery," the company boasts, "With the world’s first 64-bit desktop computer, robust cluster, and storage solutions, and thousands of scientific applications, scientists everywhere are moving to Mac — and with good reason."

The G5 is just RIPE to be a 10-15 live computer cluster.

right on. Nice first post. A huge supercomputer is beyond the needs of most. But a small 10-(I'd say) 14 node cluster sounds might nice. Too bad they aren't in the xserve. Who has the space for 7 G5 towers?

From what I read the VA Tech super cluster was purchased at standard Apple pricing for the G5DP systems. What I think Apple added was the drivers for the 20Gbps NIC (10Gbps full duplex really) and some other 'services'. I'm fairly sure the designer of said cluster looked to AMD and Intel and found them either too expensive or underperforming. He even checked IBM, but they could not deliver on time.
It is nice to see Apple take some advantage of the huge success they have had with the G5. People have been using Apple clusters - big & (mostly) small since the G3 was introduced.
I think I could MAKE room for 7 G5 towers - if given the opportunity :) Better yet - its christmas - I would give a few away and keep three! :P
