Symantec details forthcoming Panther updates

Symantec Panther updates


Symantec today confirmed to MacNN it would deliver Mac OS X 10.3 Panther compatibility updates for Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh, Norton SystemWorks 3.0 for Macintosh and Norton Utilities 8.0 for Macintosh on Monday, Dec. 22 (after first telling MacNN earlier this month). Users will be able to download the Panther compatibility updates at no cost via Symantec's LiveUpdate. Symantec also said that current users of Norton SystemWorks 3.0 for Macintosh and/or Norton Utilities 8.0 for Macintosh with Apple hardware released after June 22, 2003 (post-G5) will require a replacement boot CD for use in emergencies when the main hard drive is not functioning properly.

Replacement CDs can be requested through Symantec's customer support and will be available inside the Norton SystemWorks 3.0 for Macintosh and Norton Utilities 8.0 for Macintosh packages on retail store shelves for Norton SystemWorks 3.0 for Macintosh and Norton Utilities 9.0 for Macintosh by mid-February 2004. Consumers who use Apple hardware purchased before June 22, 2003 do not need replacement CDs. The current Norton SystemWorks for Macintosh and Norton Utilities for Macintosh CDs will boot these machines regardless of the operating system that they are running.



Panther compatibility updated for Norton Personal Firewall 3.0 for Macintosh and Norton Internet Security 3.0 for Macintosh will be available at the end of January 2004. These updates will also be delivered to current users through Symantec's LiveUpdate at no cost. Users of these products will not need a new CD.

    It's nice that Symantec finally realized that 10.3 is out.

    Don't these people ever read the friggin news? You're supposed to work on support for the new OS X update BEFORE it's released, not after. So your customers are not left for months and months without support. a*******...

    ...to be able to release updated software for new versions of Apple's operating systems before they are released. I guess Symantec's time-machine is broken.

    Uh, there are these things called developer releases, where developers get advanced access to operating systems so they can begin development of their applications to run on those operating systems. For example, Microsoft had a prototype Mac or two in 1982 (yes, 1982!) so they could begin work on Mac applications.

    So yes, Symantec is definitely remiss in taking so damn long to update their software.

    Be glad the Norton update

    ...is taking as long as possible. Read the forums and discover how often their utilities RUIN rather than repair. They may take forever to release their "utilities" as far as I care. TechTool & Disk Warrior create actual utilities for the Mac.

    Look how long it took Micromat to release Techtool 4! Nearly a year after they were selling it. And it's got a few bugs of its own.

    At least, I could use NUM on all of my Macs with excellent results under OS X starting with 10.0. Just don't install it. In fact, just run Techtools, NUM and Disk Warrior from a CD or other volume. I have never experienced data loss with any of them after using them for years. Some people claim that one, or all of these disk repair programs destroyed data, their hard drives AND their marriages for Pete sakes. Get real.

    Live Update LIES

    Norton Utilities for Macintosh version 6 is really up to 6.0.5 (or perhaps even higher by now). But don't bother running Live Update to download it. Symantec has cut off version 6's Live Update capability at 6.0.3, so sorry... no Speed Disk with OSX (and iPod) profiles for you. To find NUM version 6.0.4 you would need to buy the 7.0.1 CD. To obtain NUM version 6.0.5 you will need to purchase the 8.0 CD. Etc., etc., blaaaahhhh.

    Release on new software is one thing (they had Drive 10 already). But NUM was already shipping. All they theoretically had to do was test it with v10.3. 10.3 was being developed for a year. They couldn't do a little pre-release testing to get up to speed so they could release an update, oh, I don't know, sometime close to when 10.3 was released???

    And NUM and really everything Symantec sells has a history of breaking on EVERY OS update that comes along. I mean, would it be possible to write a piece of software that doesn't cause glitches or issues when the OS gets upgraded? They've even had issues on minor updates. Its ridiculous, and the fact that people still buy their software just shows how gullible or stupid people are.

    10.3 and start-up disk

    Although the systemworks 3.0 cd will boot apple computers built prior to June 22 the norton disk doctor does not work correctly if 10.3 is installed. In my experience it corrupted the disc being repaired with files disappearing at random on the disc. Disc doctor attempts to repair incorrect clump sizes for files when this problem is not present. I updated to 8.0.1 ,installed on the G4's disc, and the problems are not evident, but are present when using 8.0.0 on the norton start-up disc. Norton therfore needs to supply everyone who purchased v8.0 with a new start-up disc.
