Apple to launch magnesium-alloy iMac next year?

Apple next year is expected to launch a next-generation iMac featuring magnesium-alloy cases and "a high proportion of plastic parts for cost reduction, according to a Digitimes report: "The first model of New iMac using a magnesium-alloy case will come with a 20-inch LCD display and is expected to hit the market in January or February...Apple will outsource production of the New iMac to Taiwan-based Quanta Computer, which will manufacture the machines in Songjiang, Jiangsu Province (China)."

I love how MacNN has all of a sudden become a rumor site... so much for integrity of news.

Why use metal? Go to a all plastic case if they want to save money.

metal is the next logical step
mostly all other models are metal
finder is metal
so that is next trend for the iMac

COOL!

i think they should keep their consumer line white, it's an appealing alternative to the pro metal look.

...or something similar. Part of the reason the new iMacs didn't sell as well as the old is that a lot of people think they are ugly (not to metion too pricey).

If apple can cut the price of LCD iMacs in half then they would have a real winner on their hands. It would be awesome if they could sell really cheap iMacs but the fact that the first model is a 20" LCD makes me think that they will be competitively priced (for the display size) but still not cheap computers. Apple needs an $800 LCD iMac with superdrive to really win over consumers.

because everywhere people seem to be misreading this - they are NOT saying the iMac will be any more metal than it is - they are talking about changing which metals are used in the case (from the current steel/zinc to magnesium). They do not say anything about an overall change in style (pro or con).

They are just quoting a legitimate news source.

Moving the production to China oughta keep costs down. Slave labour is cheap! Way to go, Steve....

"legitimate news source"

that's a real oxymoron.
