DiVA, 3ivx D4 4.5 offer MPEG1/MPEG2 transcoding

updated 12:40 pm EST, Tue November 18, 2003

DiVA, 3ivx D4 4.5 released

3ivx today released is an MPEG-4 Video codec that is equally optimized for both Windows and Mac OS X. The Encoder is compatible with the Apple MPEG-4 and 3GPP Export components to allow the 3ivx encoded video to be copied with AAC or AMR Audio into an MP4, 3GP or MOV file. 3ivx says that 3ivx D4 4.5 is up twice as efficient as Apple's MPEG-4, producing the same quality video in half the size and is up to five times faster at encoding. 3ivx says its files are completely compatible with the Apple MPEG-4 Decoder built into and shipped with every copy of QuickTime 6.

The QuickTime encoder includes five encoding modes, including three single-pass modes (constant quality, average bitrate, and constant bitrate) and two dual-pass modes (best quality, constant bitrate).

DiVA utilizes the QuickTime architecture, any QuickTime video codec installed on the system should be usable; however, special features such as Rectangular Pixel Encoding and 2-Pass encoding can only be used with 3ivx. Also, DiVA can only use codecs, not exporters, such as the MPEG-2 Exporter, according to 3ivx. DiVA runs on Mac OS X 10.2 or later.
