Mozilla 0.7

updated 02:26 pm EST, Sun January 14, 2001

Max Muller sent us a note about the most recent update to Mozilla.org's open-source browser project:

Just thought you might be interested that Mozilla 0.7 has been released. This is the next major milestone after the 0.6 release (which was exactly the same as Netscape 6). On the site you can download a Mac installer. Works much better than Mozilla 0.6/Netscape 6. I haven't seen too much talk about this in the Mac community which is a shame, the project definitely needs more Mac testers. Mozilla has the potential of being a truly incredible browser.

Mozilla 0.7 runs better then Netscape 6 (and Moz 0.6) and includes support for SSL.

It shaping up to be a great browser...

    vs. IE 5?

How does it compare to IE 5 in terms of speed and stability?

    It's too late...

Mozilla 0.7? What am I supposed to do? Use buggy, pre-release software instead of a solid, stable (and fast) browser? h***, if I wanted to use buggy, pre-release quality code, I'd run Windows!

Like it or not, it's too late for Netscape. IE may not be the most svelte proggie on my iMac, but it's smaller, faster and MUCH more stable than Netscape.

    stable..NOT

When you make a web browser for public release, do you release it with so many bugs, that the moment it is opened it crashes? I think NOT. After it imported my Netscape preferences, I saw everything load on the top of the Toolbar, but not the bottom. It said it was contacting Mozilla.org at the bottom of the browser. And then without warning it just quit on itself. The same thing happened when I dragged an text document from my hard disk over the application icon. Plain text files it should understand. If it doesn't understand those, then it really is in deep you know what.

    Netscape is dead

I think its time to get over this netscape thing and remeber that its AOL now, Mac users are too smart that they are not interested in testing this c***..... It will never be a great browser again on the mac, face it people, there is icab, Omniweb for OS-X and IE they all blow netscrap in the dust, times have changed enough of the nastolgia, get real, don't bother us with this anymore, a lot of us have waisted good time downloading and deleting this 27 mb AOL sht.

    Works OK for me!!

It runs a h*** of a lot better on my machine than NS6 or Mozilla's last milestone. It's a shame...I used to be a die-hard MS user til Explorer 5 showed me the way...now since iCab is maturing so nicely, I am migrating once again. That seems to be where I am staying on my non-OSX machines. Like I said, it works better than other builds, but it ain't worth the time and latency to actually use it for my daily work.

    Geez.

Yup, great attitudes. No wonder Microsoft is taking over every single desktop on the planet. GIVE Netscape 6 a try, GIVE Mozilla builds (which are newer than the Netscape 6 release versions) a try, GIVE iCab a try. All this talk of "Bah, s**** it, AOL owns it, so it HAS to suck now" is just STUPID. What will you be saying when Microsoft decides that it's going to leave the Mac browser behind after it's shoved everyone else out of the market?

Mozilla 0.7 is working great for me. Just like the people that complain about it running on Linux, I bet that half the people out there that claim it crashes all the time are using Kalidascope or 50 other 3rd party skankware apps.

    It has improved...

I've given a few past versions a try every now and then, didn't like em then, they were buggy and unstable. But so far (only an hours use so far) this version seems to be a big improvement, I won't be taking IE5 off my machine anytime soon still, but this version of Moz' really has impressed me. Worth a look if you're openminded.

    nightly builds

I use Mozilla 7, the most recent nightly build. I like it a lot. I like it better than iCab, and iCab is real nice. Give it a try folks. If you want choice, you have to exercise that choice. These guys have put a lot of work into this project, deserve your support.

I have used it all day, and it hasn't crashed on me yet. Pretty good for work in progress.

    Stupid, but true

"All this talk of "Bah, s**** it, AOL owns it, so it HAS to suck now" is just STUPID."

Fact is, AOL DOES own it now, and it DOES suck. No way around that.

This project is so far behind now that I don't see it being a real alternative for people who do a lot of browsing every day. Whether you like MSFT or not, that company has an entire business unit devoted to creating what is turning out to be some really nice software for our platform. h***, doesn't the guy who created iCab work out of his basement or something? AOL has the resources to get this thing out the door; they're not getting it out the door (at least not in a timely fashion), which I suppose points to what a high priority the project is.

Mozilla/Netscape, whatever you want to call it, is going to have to shine my shoes and make me breakfast while I browse in order to get me to switch. Not gonna happen.
