New car audio integration system for iPods

updated 09:20 am EST, Fri October 31, 2003

", 0, 0);

Dension Audio Systems is advertising a new iPod-based audio integration system for cars: " is the ultimate car kit for your Apple iPod. iPod audio is routed through your head unit's CD changer port and keypresses including FF & RW are passed from your head unit (and steering wheel controls in suitably-equipped vehicles) to your iPod resulting in safe control of your iPod while driving." It is available with an optional cradle manufactured by Brodit (for classic and 3rd generation iPods: "We recomend Brodit's range of ProClip damage free mounting brackets which are available for a wide range of vehicles and mounting locations.") Pricing was not available.

    Is there more info?

There's not much on the linked page, I'm going to sign up to see what is up with this product.

    Expensive

I've been following this unit closely for my MINI Cooper, and decided to not bother. The retail price in the UK is 79 pounds, they want 199USD for the unit in the states and Canada.

Meanwhile I bought 8 dollars worth of stuff from Radioshack and built an AUX port with a Ground Loop Isolator (no electronics knowledge) and built my own adapter. Took an hour, I also bought the new Belkin car adapter for 3G iPods.

The only difference is you cant control the iPods forward and back with the head unit, but for 150USD cheaper, I can live with that.

    finally!

I've been advocating this for f*cking ever --finally good to see someone went ahead and did it. Now i can tuck my ipod nicely away in my glove compartment and still maintain complete functionality without cables all over the place... i'm not sure of the price, but if it is indeed 150USD, then that is way too steep.

    Volvo solution

Blitzsafe offers an adapter that connects to the 6 disc changer cable port (fooling the headunit) and has a set of RCA jacks for connection. Simply push the 6-disc changer button and you can play your AUX device, iPod, DVD, XM Radio, etc.

the '04 Mini Coopers have this as an option, I think it was around $50 when you build a car online.

I have heard good feedback from users of the new iTrip and a 3G iPod if you don't have a competing radio station.

The new Acura TL offers a standard 5.1 DVD-Audio system, and a standard Bluetooth hands-free phone system but no mention of an AUX input!!

    PIE electronics

I've been using a CD changer to AUX converter with my iPod for about 8 months now. I got it from PIE (www.pie.net). I actually bought it from an XM satellite dealer for around $90. Other than not controlling the iPod from the head unit, it's wonderful.

    199 USD

Last time I checked the ICE Link was 199usd, not 150. If someone does decide to buy this get it from the UK, you'll save yourself some dosh: www.ihavetohave.it

03 MINI owners can make a cable pretty simply, and other car makes can get easy enough solutions for iPod=car stuff. The real benefit of the ICE Link is it translates the forward/back commands and Play/Pause to the head unit, but a good in car mount for your ipod will solve this problem.

The Blitsafe adapters are basically straight audio, but are also quite costly.

Many head units already have an AUX input in the front or back of the unit, if so all that is needed is either a stereo mini jack to RCA cable, or the same cable plus a ground loop isolator for those who want to charge and listen at the same time

    I

I really want something like this. I have a GM truck and I could very easily turn my CD CHanger input into an AUX, but I have steering wheel controls and I really want to keep them. I REALLY want to.
