PowerLogix today announced the for the PowerMac G4 Cube: "Running at a speed of 1.4 GHz, this new CPU card has twice the L2 cache (512K) of the previous 7455-based cards (256K) for additional performance. Cube

The whole point about the cube is not to need a fan. So, does this upgrade have a fan? Presumably, if it only consumes 10W at 1Gig, it should not NEED a fan???

    get real

I thought the WHOLE point was that it was a computer, a small elegant one. If someone wants to hot rod it, they've got to pay the price. don't be such an a**, if you had the chance to go to that speed wouldn't you?

The alternate aluminum enclosure just released may help, but the cube was a balancing act, and with these newer chips and video cards, it's getting thrown out of balance.

Get something real to whine about or shut your pie hole.

    easy there, Mr. Real

Man. Talk about jumpin' ugly. a**? Whine about? Shut your pie hole? The person simply wanted to know if the processor needed a fan. This isn't "hot rodding," it's upgrading to extend the life of a great machine. If even you can understand that "the whole point" of the cube was its "elegant" design, then it makes sense to look for an fanless upgrade. I recommend you consider taking an anger management course.

    very quiet fan

others who've installed the various upgrades for the cube already available (800MHz, 1GHz) have said the fan is very quiet, quieter than the internal hard drive so you don't notice it as much anyway. i've got a cube and upgraded the video card so it now works with QE and have been wanting to upgrade the processor.

the biggest question is if this powerlogix upgrade has the same sleep problems that many others have had with previous powerlogix upgrades. i've totally removed powerlogix from consideration because of those problems and i really haven't seen anyone say they've been resolved.

    sleep problem fixed

I don't have persional experience, but according to this article http://www.macsonly.com/pl1200.html the sleep problem has been resolved since February.

I notice that powerlogix sells at 1.2GHz upgrade for $370. It seems like $230 is a big premium just to get to 1.4GHz (plus the other performance "tweaks", such as better caches). I have an un-upgraded Cube and that 1.2GHz is looking pretty attractive.

    $230 premium

I have a Cube and am considering an upgrade card.

Based upon what I've read, the $230 premium of a 1.4 over a 1.2 is not just 200 extra Mhz. It is also the fact that the 1.4 is built on a chip that is supposed to run cooler and consume less power... meaning less strain on the power board and the parts inside.
