Logitech today announced its QuickCam Orbit webcam, designed to "turn heads with its mechanical pan and tilt feature and elegant form factor. The camera is ideal for video instant messaging, since it physically moves to keep a person's face automatically centered in the field of view." The camera offers 128 degrees of horizontal motion, and 54 degrees of vertical motion. It features Logitech's face-tracking software and auto-zoom technology (up to 3x zoom). The QuickCam Orbit captures up to 1.3 megapixel still photos, and true 640x480 videos; The USB 2.0 device is $130 and includes a 9-inch stand, a built-in microphone, and Mac OS X software.

Cool idea about the face tracking software but...

This thing looks kind of spooky. I don't think I would want to use it. It looks too much like some kind of sinister techno gadget that Darth Vader would use to get you to tell him about the Rebel Plans.

I think I'll stick with iSight.

Does it work with iChat?

From the lack of mention in the specs, I'm guessing no.

I was wondering the same thing. My guess is that since it's based on USB (not Firewire) it would *not* work with iChat.

that face-tracking software needs to be "borrowed" by apple for iSight 2 and iChatAV Motorized Edition (y'know, to continue the tradition of tacking on more nonsense to the iChat name and branding).

with a little hack called iChatUSBCam.
i havent used it. im sure there are others out there.
but for the same price, i like the portability and coolness of the isight. i dont really need a camera to follow me around. like was said, kinda creepy.
it would be cool to remote control the camera via the net.

Big Brother is watching you.

Actually, this thing is pretty cool, abit somewhat creepy.

I don't know whether or not it's all that useful. How many people move all around that much when they're chatting? Still, it's a nice little feature to have.

When MacWorld magazine reviews an Apple product and declares that it has "inconsistent quality" then you know that Apple has really messed up. MacWorld hardly ever criticizes Apple hardware, they don't bite the hand that feeds them, but here's a quote:

"We can't check the vital signs of every computer Apple ships. We can, however, report on the quality of the PowerBooks we've received, and that report is not encouraging. Of six 15-inch PowerBooks Macworld ordered from a non-Apple retailer, three had to be returned. One repeatedly locked up and experienced kernel panics after being unplugged from an external monitor, another's fan ran constantly, and another displayed only the magenta video channel when plugged into an external display. So if you absolutely must have this PowerBook now, be prepared for potential problems."

"The screen on the 1.25GHz 15-inch PowerBook used for this review exhibited a white blotch about the size of a dime when we put a white background (such as a blank Microsoft Word document) on the desktop. And the latch on this PowerBook locked inconsistently -- the lid occasionally popped up after it had been closed for a couple of seconds. Reports of such latch problems are widespread on the Discussions area of Apple's Web site and on other Mac-related sites."

And this has exactly WHAT to do with the Orbit?
