ZDNet: Apple charges $129 for security fix

ZDnet Australia discusses three of the many security holes that Mac OS X 10.3 Panther fixes, noting that patches are not yet available for users of earlier versions of Mac OS X (e.g. Jaguar): "The first details 'systemic' flaws in the way Mac OS X handles file and directory permissions, while the second details a kernel level vulnerability that does not affect default installations of the operating system. The third involves a buffer overflow condition that may be remotely exploitable. Controversially, Apple has not yet released patches for the security issues. @Stake has advised Mac users to upgrade to the latest Apple operating system, which is not vulnerable to the flaws."

129834 10/29, 10:42am, EST wow, really?
So let me get this straight. It's a crime when Apple charges for a new point release, which also happens to fix issues...

yet when Microsoft releases Windows XP or 98, it's a GREAT improvement over 95, but we're not considering how many security holes 95 and 98 had..

:) typical Ziff-Davis crap, hence why I don't read them anymore.

Old bugs in Jaguar that are fixed in Panther are still not fixed in Jaguar. Yes, Apple shipped a defective product, and won't fix it, asking you to 'buy' the bug fixes.

Imagine if car companies refused to fix manufacturing/design flaws, telling you instead to buy the 'lastest model to fix that'

One day, a company will get sued for shipping a defective product they won't fix, and I'll be very happy when that happens!

this speaks for itself...as if you get nothing else for $129. Compare to Microsoft, please.

That is bullshit. These flaws are either not enabled by default or have easy workarounds. The core file bug is a joke - how many users have that enabled?

Meanwhile, I'm waiting for MS to patch security holes in my WindowsNT machine.

Ok, what about all the other bugs in Jaguar? or previous versions for that matter??

I agree.

At least with a car you get a warranty.

Software? Nope. Got a bug that you need fixed? Tough, go buy the bug fix in the latest version.

THAT is the real bullshit here.

this is bullshit.

whoever made that car comparison, stop making car comparisons.

has the VW beetle been "upgraded" with side impact beams, they weren't standard in 60s but today NO car comes without them. Why not insist that VW "fixes" this "security hole" in their cars? gimme a break and stop making car comparisons, it's stupid.

again, another example of a microsoft-friendly media publishing house. I won't read ziff-davis material and the Mac community should not worry itself over what they write.

Let the jealous accusations fly.. let them live in their world... I'm happy with my Mac, and I'm still running Jaguar, probably will for another year, when I buy a new computer with Panther. Jaguar is just as useful today as it was 18 months ago when I bought my first Mac.

That's what cool about open source

You can fix the bug yourself (or ask someone knowledgable), and since you give access to the source, you don't need to provide a warranty!

Win-Win, unlike proprietary software.
