PowerLogix upgrade cards get PPC 7457 chip

updated 04:25 pm EDT, Wed October 22, 2003

PowerLogix's new cards are compatible with all Power Mac G4 models beginning with the "AGP Graphics" model, up to and including the QuickSilver 2002. Retail pricing is $800 for a dual-1.2GHz PowerForce and $1200 for dual 1.4GHz PowerForce. The first production boards will begin shipping in approximately 1-2 weeks, with constrained supplies of the higher speed model, according to PowerLogix.

    Will they finally WORK?

Hopefully PowerLogix has finally gotten it right. The previous versions were notorious for running hot or not running at all!

    yah right

im going to pay almost more money for a CHIP than an entire ibook running at 1 ghz. what a joke! thes epeople better lower prices before we all just go get new machines instead of their overpriced chips. big big joke.

    I'd consider it...

Its 2 chips man... The iBook only has 1 chip.

On top of that, these chips run with 512K L2 cache and 2 MB /processor of L3 cache per processor. Much more than the iBook.

Getting an older PowerMac upgraded with one of these dual processor upgrades is an attractive option for people who run mission critical applications from an older powermac which is already set up and configured (perhaps with several large 250 GB hard drives internally with many hours of video projects, for example...

These people cannot simply just buy an iBook, and a G5 would be cost prohibitive and hard to migrate all that work and data over...

For these people, $800 for a dual 1.2 ghz upgrade is reasonable.

    Before you get one ...

That is exactly what i was thinking. That pricing is crazy. You can get a refurb machine for not much more from apple:

    Power Mac G4 1.25GHz DUAL/256MB/80GB/Combo/GigE/56K
    - Refurbished $1,399.00

    Power Mac G4 1.42 GHz DUAL/512MB/120GB/SuperDrive/GigE/56K
    - Refurbished $1,999.00

Just sell your machine, get $500 for it, and you've already made up the difference. I just upgraded my Sawtooth and after i put a videocard and processor in it, i could have a refurbished dual 1.25Ghz.

    Low yields

There's probably a low number of 1.4 7457 procs available which would be why they're price right now. The dual 1.2 upgrade doesn't look too bad. The 512 L2 cache is bigger than the 256 L2 cache in the MDD PowerMacs. In some instances, the size of the L2 and L3 cache can make a bigger difference than the DDR RAM used in the MDD G4s. I'd like to see some benchmarks on how the new PL dual 1.2s stack up against the old.

    When support non-AGP?

I have a Blue & White G3 with a 450 G4 ZIF upgrade. Am I just SOL from now on for processor upgrades? Everything that comes out now seems to only be for the AGP G4s and up.
