Over 1 million iTunes for Windows downloaded
updated 08:50 am EDT, Mon October 20, 2003
Apple today digital jukebox software have been download in the 3.5 days since its launch last Thursday, and over one million songs have been purchased and downloaded by iTunes users in the same period: "iTunes users have purchased over one million songs in the first three and a half days since our launch last Thursday, which compares with one million songs in the first seven days when we introduced the original iTunes for Mac users last April," said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. "We're off to a great start, and our competition isn't even out of the starting gates yet."

Booya!
Seriously, I hope there not counting how many times downloads were attempted. I probably tried to download iTunes for my PC Box 10x before waiting 24hrs.

Up 'til I loaded iTunes, I couldn't get consistent sound of any sort from this W2K box at work. They'd all lose the left channel after a short while. So far, I've been using iTunes for hours and hours w/o trouble. Apple does a better job of programming a Windows box than the native Windows programmers. I guess whomever they found to do the job has a major clue! Maybe it helps to actually PAY programmers, rather than go with what a person whips up on their free time.

It's too bad that iTunes and iTMS is "...too restrictive for Windows users...". What are those 1 million users going to do with those 1 million songs?

They are probably not registering a download unless it was completed. If you were never able to start the download, then it probably was never logged on the server side. Failed or interrupted downloads can be filtered out as well by looking at the number of bytes transferred.

horrible. When you think of the millions of users on the PC side, then you hear only 1 million users downloaded itunes? and only another 1 million songs were sold? That's horrible. If the PC side has a 10 to 1 ratio on Mac, then 10 million songs should be sold by the end of this week. I know Apple is fighting an up hill battle for 2 reasons 1)Music is free 2) They are a non windows company, the results should be a lot better by nov 1st.

These figures are from 3 Days....the only time MS has had downloads like this is when they've released a Service Pack to fix a virus that millions of folks have already contracted.

Consider that the Windows people likely had little clue about what Apple is up to - and won't until they see actual iTunes advertisements on television and print. I got 10 people to download it by sending them IMs. They had no clue about it being out, only my geek friends did.
Tell your friends (if you have Windows friends) about it, and the word spread.

I would suspect bandwidth to be some of the issue. Transfer of some 20 Million Megabytes or 20 Terabytes worth of data over the internet in 3 days is nothing to scoff at. Once the early adopters give it a wirl and others can get in to download, the numbers will surely climb.

1) MUSIC IS NOT FREE - Music is as free as when you walk out of a store with a candy bar in your back pocket. Say music is overpriced, say people can pirate the music for free, say the labels are killing music... but not "MUSIC IS FREE.
2) Windows users (and even Mac users, but to a lesser degree) are slow to catch on to new programs. Considering WinAMP has had YEARS to infiltrate the Windows world, 1,000,000 downloads in 3 days is amazing.
Apple wouldn't have posted the info if it wasn't VERY good.
