Reader: Virtual PC incompatible with Norton

updated 11:30 am EDT, Fri October 17, 2003

A MacNN reader writes: "Norton SystemWorks 2004 for Windows is incompatible with VirtualPC 6.1 running WinXP or Win98. (It likely also affects VPC 6.1 running WinMe and Win2000, although I haven't tested with that.) This occurs because NSW 2004 (unlike NSW 2002 or 2003) runs a hardware check at the time of install, and VPC 6.1 fails that check. Microsoft has investigated the problem and confirmed this to me. Yesterday, I asked that they try to work around the problem, as Connectix did when TurboTax for Windows wasn't compatible with VPC 6.0--Microsoft has not yet responded to the request."

    Use Diskwarrior Instead

It's better than that out dated Norton code.

    Re: Use Diskwarrior Inste

I think they're referring to the Windows version of Norton 2004, since he said he's trying to run it under VirtualPC.

    Skip scan?

I had a problem with installing a virus program on my PC at work because of a locked file that it could not scan durring the pre-install virus check. I ended up finding a method to skip that startup scan, and was able to install it fine...

You might check with symantec to see if there is something you can type to skip this scan. I would be supprised if there wasn't an option avalible...

    Why oh why

    does anyone use Norton anything?
    let it go!
I haven't even used anything other than disk first aid that comes with the OS, other wise they are all waste of money.

    Why?

WTF. Why are people using Norton for VPC. VPC isn't supposed to be used as a daily replacement for Windoze. It's meant for that odd app that hasn't been ported on the Mac. If these morons who are complaining need to use Norton on VPC that often then they should go out and buy a real PC.

    i get the feeling...

...that microsoft's mac bu is realizing the headache they just bought and promised to support. basically supporting all of the windows software apps, good AND bad, running in emulation on the mac. i bet th mac bu is now longing for the days when all they had to do was update internet explorer and upgrade/patch office v. x.

    VPC and Norton

I think it is valid to run SystemWorks on VPC. I use VPC for some computing tasks, and keep the Anti-virus part of SystemWorks running on it, to avoid any viruses I might get when opening Windows files. Sure, the virus might not affect the mac, but it will affect the VPC disk image.

As for purchasing a real PC, I use VPC on my Powerbook G4/800, and it is responsive enough for daily use. That gives me a portable setup. Purchasing a PC is not an option in that case.

    Don't expect any updates

This is Microsoft, remember? This is the company that only releases updates for security issues, not actual bugs (look at Windows, Office 98, and, well, all of their other products!)
