Apple, Pepsi to give away 100 million songs

Apple and Pepsi-Cola North America today announced a "historic promotion" to legally give away 100 million free songs to both Mac and Windows PC users from the iTunes® Music Store. Beginning February 1, 100 million winning codes will be randomly seeded in 20 ounce and 1 liter bottles of Pepsi, Diet Pepsi and Sierra Mist, and the winning codes will be redeemable for a free song from the iTunes Music Store. Winners will simply go to Apple's iTunes Music Store (www.iTunes.com), enter the code found under the bottle cap and choose any 99 cent song from the online store's vast catalog of over 400,000 songs. The Pepsi iTunes promotion will kick-off with a Super Bowl ad on February 1, 2004, and will run until March 31, 2004.

This is a huge gain for Apple. Unfortunately, they've partnered with the inferior cola manufacturer, Pepsi. That's a big negative in my book, but I'll live. This is going to be a wonderful promotion, and it will create a significant amount of mindshare for iTMS. Apple's making some very impressive moves indeed, and all I can say is I hope they maintain this pace!

I think there will be a tie in where Bob Dole uses Pepsi to wash down his Viagara so he can get jiggy with Britney as they listen to Barry White on an Ipod.

I'm not a big Pepsi fan, but I do like some other Pepsi Co. sodas so I hope the promo applies to them as well. I think it's a really good idea to get people exposed to the music store and hopefully buying music and perhaps an iPod. My friends are ecstatic that they can finally have iTunes on their windows machines. It won't get them to switch to the mac, but either way it's a nice potential money maker for Apple.

Pepsi is hardly the minority cola in the United States, which is the only place where you can use the iTMS anyway. Coca-Cola has more worldwide dominance, but in the U.S., Pepsi is just as popular (as far as annual sales) as Coke. Cool deal for Apple!
