Apple's Keynote Webcast this week at the Expo was the largest number of concurrent viewers for a scheduled, live Webcast. "According to Akamai, the company that serves the live streams for Apple's QuickTime TV, at its peak the keynote had 35,407 simultaneous viewers accessing 5.3 gigabits per second of video at broadband rates [300kpbs] This tops Apple's previous personal best of 21,000 simultaneous viewers at last summer's Macworld Expo in New York City." A replay of the keynote is available via QuickTime.

    No stream for me...

What lucky souls here were actually able to get into the live stream and see it at reasonable rates? I couldn't even get through on a T3. There needs to be some serious server upgrades to handle the load.

    i was happy with it

Guess I was lucky. I have a 56k modem and was pleased with both the video and audio quality.

    There was an outage...

It wasn't your connection speed that prevented you from connecting (as the previous poster notes, 56 kbps was okay), but that you tried to connect during what seemed to me as an outage window. I was connected, got dropped, couldn't get connected for a while, and then, perfect. I'm using aDSL in S.F. You may now watch the keynote in QuickTime at Apple's site. Enjoy.

    Webcasting

Currently requires a bi-rectional connection from the server to each viewer, so that's probably the main reason not everyone could watch, unlike real broadcasting which is one way.
One day maybe webcasting will work more like broadcasting, but that's a whole new TCP/IP ballgame...

    Stream Cubism

Im in Sweden on ADSL and saw the keynote. It was like a moving cubic piece of art and shortvawe radio on low battery most of the time. I agree with the need for mor "push". Then again if breaking records is the issue, youd expect that a connection is made at the expense of quality. The statistics is made at the server I suppose.
Still I got the message: Apple will try hard again. And maybe they will get it:
There are three kinds of people to turn to: Producers, Consumers and Administrators. Apple almost lost the first trying to reach the second. The cube hit the "and". Now (maybe) they will reach Ps in march, and Cs are kept in waiting also.

Guys, on Cable in central USA, and the stream was PICTURE PERFECT. It didnt' crack up once, and the audio and video were synched throughout. I was using QT 5 on a Mac with 9.04, and it worked GREAT. I've NEVER had streaming that GREAT. You just must be unlucky..

    Perfect Viewing...

I had a perfect viewing of the keynote here in California, USA on a ADSL connection.

    I was using the QT5 beta & 9.0.4 on a Cube.

    My viewing

I watched the keynote from two places -- (1) my company's LAN (behind our firewall), where the video was blocky and the sound sucked and (2) from outside my company's firewall, using our AirPort connection.

I switched back and forth several times and it was always the same (bad inside, good outside). I suspect that some people's problems with the streams may be from being behind overloaded firewalls and/or proxies.

Also, remember that Akamai and companies like it serve from the "edge" of the network ... meaning the closer they have servers to you, the better service you will get.

If you had bad service, maybe you should bug your ISP to look into Akamai's offerings.

    Best keynote stream yet!

Finally! After 3 years of trying to watch these keynote streams live, this was the first one that I was able to watch from beginning to end as it happened, and I only had to restart the stream once! And yes, I have had a broadband connection every time.
I'm glad to see that streaming media is starting to live up to the hype.
