one day earlier and it woulda been out on my birthday. the Big four oh...
I heard it's snappier.
can't wait to install that baby!!
the gun a bit? Where is the PR? The Apple says nothing about the release date. OK, there is a we'll be back soon on the store. But how do you know that isn't the new iBooks or eMacs?
woot
Hehehe,
I have some friends who are developers and they say that Panther should please quite a many folks. All I can say is that I can not wait. I hope the new Finder is really all I have seen in previews and such. The old one irks me sometimes, but overall of course, Mac OS X still rocks and will only get better.
Also,... has anyone noticed that every year we get a massive update now... versus the gaps between the old Classic OS before. I mean OS 8 was definitely great and OS 9 so fine, but I am happy to see this big update happen once a year roughly.
Now if they would only fix the bugs in backup beta,... of course it is a beta, but it does quite a bit for what it is,... nuff rambling...

I just placed an order for the Panther Family pack at the Apple Store. Estimated delivery is PM, 24 October.
For those early G5 buyers, you're eligible for the "free" ($19.95 S&H) deal.
Woo-hoo!
im using panther right now:)
That PIXLET is GONE. absolutely no mention of this feature anymore.
Way to hand the crown over to Windows Media 9 guys.... sigh
OK.....I'll show my ignorance. Just what the blazes is the PIXLET, and what is it's significance?
ponder the MYSTIC SIGNIFICANCE of the release date.
what the h***'s going on???
what about powerbooks that were recently purchased (new 15"ers)...will these also qualify for a "free" upgrade to Panther?
Who knew it was called Pixlet. Anyway, that's a feature of Quicktime, not Panther...
what about powerbooks that were recently purchased (new 15"ers)...will these also qualify for a "free" upgrade to Panther?
Nope. You should have waited to buy your powerbook (h***, you people knew Panther was coming before the end of the year, and you knew Apple has not given 'free' upgrades to the OS's to buyers prior to the "official release announcment date", so why would you go out and buy a new Mac in September, esp. if you were thinking you'd get a free upgrade?).
ponder the MYSTIC SIGNIFICANCE of the release date.
what the h***'s going on???
I don't know, what's going on? Are you talking 10/24? Or just that its the 24th? Or that its a friday? What, you were one of those "Its got to be 10/30, 10.3, get it!" people?
The 24th is a good date because it lets the Mac publications get their next issues out on time and allowed to cover Panther in depth.
Do I buy Panther or do I buy a Gamecube?
it's a tricky one.
It's part of quicktime. go to quicktime's page and you can see all the information on that page. http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/quicktime/
I'm glad I didn't buy a new 12" powerbook yesterday! now I can get a free upgrade, or wait another couple weeks and get it with the powerbook.
I believe the Tysons, VA Apple Store's remodeling will be done just in time for the 24th.
Im buying everybody an upgrade to panther. The O/S is on me guys....
$69 for education. Nice.
My question is what build number was the GM? I know rumor sites were saying that 7B85 was Client GM and 7B86 was Server GM. I'd just like some confirmation of this.
Any word if DVD Player will have Mutli-Channel Support? Even just plaain Dolby Surround™ suport would be nice. When you click on the DVD player link on the list of Panther applications, it takes you to the info page for DVD player from 10.1.
If you read most of the 'features' they include 'speed' and compatability improvements - like we should be excited that Safari actually now WORKS with JAVA and we may not have to sit and WAIT for a spinning cursor?
Mail is finally going to be almost as fast as Outlook was in 9 (Allelluliah!!!) - and wasn't one click folder access already a reality with drop down menus in 9?
Sorry guys you won't be getting my accolades until my life gets truly easier with this masterly brainwashing Apple has perpetrated on the loyal zombie followers...
Independent speed tests showed DECREASING speed from 10.0 to 10.1 to 10.2 so we'll just have to wait and see now won't we...
what is family pack???? I will not be able to put OS X on more than one machine and network them at home like usual?
We've purchased two G5's, so I tried the "Otherwise, follow the appropriate link" (for US customers who puchased prior to today, on http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/). It would not recognize the serial numbers, so I called the 800 number, and was on hold less than 10 seconds before a nice lady answered. The nice lady offered to check the serial number herself, but also could not find it in Apple's own database. She guessed that the database does not yeat contain the serial numbers of G5's purchased before today, and recommended trying again "later" or using the mail-in form. I tried downloading the mail-in form PDF and got the "Looking for something at Apple.com?" page indicating the link did not exist.
C'mon, Apple, cowboy up. You may be crestfallen over having a fourth-rate actor as your new governor, but please get down to doing business and doing it right.
You can just the same as usual, but to keep the good karma you'd want to actually pay for the number of them you use.
am i missing it ? is there not supposed to be some sort of color matching thing .. better then current color sync ?
"The 24th is a good date because it lets the Mac publications get their next issues out on time and allowed to cover Panther in depth."
Not to mention it's a Friday and Apple will draw a much bigger crowd to it's retail stores. I'm sure it'll be another 'up all night' type of event.
"Independent speed tests showed DECREASING speed from 10.0 to 10.1 to 10.2 so we'll just have to wait and see now won't we..."
What test are you pointing to? Honestly, provide some links...
The versions of 10 have become increasing faster and more responsive do to improvements (Quartz extreme for instance).
Maybe you're just pissed your old Performa can't run OS X...
I'm miffed.... Because I purchased a 15" newer powerbook last friday (10-3) from an Apple Retail Store for $2500, I'm have to pay $129 instead of $19.99. If I had purchased a G5 back in July for its starting price of $1999, I would be able to buy Panther for $19.99. That seemss real fair and real wise! I thought this was the "Year of the LAPTOP!" :-(
I should'a waited a couple months to let the kinks get worked out but excitement got the better of me.
Looking forward to the uniformity of Finder, open and save windows. I have been looking forward to that since about 1992.
I was kind'a disappointed that it didn't have any features I didn't already know about.

Apple release dates are on the 24th for OS's
why the 24th though?
WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN??
I spent $3000 on a new Powerbook less than 3 weeks ago and now I get to pay $129 too. I honestly wouldn't mind except Apple decided to give a big discount to some recent buyers of new hardware and not others. That really does seem to be poor PR.
... is to know whether the MOT spinoff will be bought by AAPL - I asked this yesterday & the comments forum was removed!
I doubt AAPL wants to get into the semi-conductor business. I believe MOT wanted to separate it from the rest of its business because semi-conductor stocks have been do well recently and if that side of the business were split-off it might go better than wrapped under MOT.
unless I misunderstood your post, which can be pretty easy for me to do. :-)
Looks like all G5s get a copy of Panther regardless of when it was bought. http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate
anyone know what happened to that class action settlement wherein a Wallstreet 10.1.5 user like myself is supposed to be eligable for a $100.00 copy?
If you just purchased a Mac and it is not a G5 I would encourage yuo to call Apple and complain. I am sure that they will get you a copy of Panther for only the S&H cost. Guys, in life nothing is free. You really have to work for it. Just pick up the phone, dial your favorite number and everything will be solved. Oh, yeah...stop complaining. When you bought your PowerBook you knew what OS you were getting with it, Apple should not have to give you a new one just because it is just coming out....but they are nice, and I am sure that they will. Good luck!
I am gland the wait is finally over!
If you wanna know what's happening with the class-action lawsuit, get off your lazy butt and get involved with it. Don't sit around and let a bunch of other people do all the work just so you can reap the rewards.
Lazy a**.
My question is what build number was the GM? I know rumor sites were saying that 7B85 was Client GM and 7B86 was Server GM. I'd just like some confirmation of this.
Why in the world would ANYONE care what the h*** the build number is on this? Do you people write this stuff down in your diary or something? Got some office pool going as to what the final build number is?
We need to know what the build number is, it is of utmost importance. If you don't know why we need to know, then you wouldn't understand if we told you. Don't worry about it.
" If you wanna know what's happening with the class-action lawsuit, get off your lazy butt and get involved with it. Don't sit around and let a bunch of other people do all the work just so you can reap the rewards.

Excuse me for mistaking you for a normal person j*******.
> $69 for education. Nice.
Not so nice if you don't live in the US. I just checked on the UK applestore for education and the price is like £83 = $137.83 (used Calculator to work that one out!)
How unfair is that?? This is even an increase on 10.2 which was like £60.
seems like apple UK want to promote their education products by having us all use 10.0 so that all the students think macs are POS.
If $129 is too much for you, you could hold off buying it for a few weeks. Wait until the Mac Retailers start to offer it, they might offer a better deal. I got Jaguar for $100 from Outpost.com last year, while most of you were whining about the $129 it cost from Apple.
The build number is useful because if you know of further improvements since the GM build, then you might wait to buy it. For instance, I read on MOSR yesterday about the build numbers, and that they're on the 7CXX series, while the 7BXX was the GM series. That means 10.3.1 will be coming out sometime around the end of the year. I would probably wait for that at this point.
As for these independent test...what friggin machine is this that they test on? It must be some really early G3, like the first 233, since as OS X got more complex, these machines that shouldn't run it in the first place, get even more clobbered without the hardware needed to take advantage of the speed-helping stuff like QE.
>Any word if DVD Player will have Mutli-Channel Support? Even >just plaain Dolby Surround™ suport would be nice. When you >click on the DVD player link on the list of Panther applications, it >takes you to the info page for DVD player from 10.1.
Actually it will support "Dubly Surround", which is far superior to Dolby Surround.
"what is family pack???? I will not be able to put OS X on more than one machine and network them at home like usual?"
Er.... ever read the end user license agreement that comes with single-license packages of OS X? It's good for one (1) machine.
Of course, what you do in the privacy of your own home.... right now, neither Apple Computer nor even John High-and-Mighty Ashcroft can interfere with, no matter how morally repugnant it might be.
I want to be a swithcer. I have XP but would like X.3 since it's the latest release of Window OSXP but I tried 10.2.8 and it didn't work for me. Also, how many floppies will Panther come on. Can I download it on my Treo and transfer it my Gateway? That would be nice.
Just spent $3,200 on a 17" laptop about 3 weeks ago and I don't qualify for the up-to-date program? That's a bit tight!!
" honestly wouldn't mind except Apple decided to give a big discount to some recent buyers of new hardware and not others. That really does seem to be poor PR"
It was still your choice to buy the powerbook before 10.3 came out... You seem educated enough to know Panther was coming, and you choose not to wait another 3 three weeks....
"Just spent $3,200 on a 17" laptop about 3 weeks ago and I don't qualify for the up-to-date program? That's a bit tight!!"
Well, if you had $3200 to spend on laptop, you've probably got another $129 burning a whole in your pocket.
The GameCube is cheaper. Plus you can't play Metroid or Zelda on OS X.

Nice try, but for your next work of fiction, please remember that PC users are more clueless than this.
Assuming the install disk is about 620mb then I would guess about 443 floppies.

When was the last time that the latest and greatest M$ product improved the performance of every machine. NEVER. They only way to do that was to shell out more $$$$ for a new computer.
Additionally, many of the periodic updates to 10.2 have also increased speed and compatibility. Why shouldn't the NEXT version of the OS have those kinds of improvments too.
Every release of Jaguar has gotten faster on my machine. Every version of Safari has gotten faster. If I have to spend $130 buck to get my almost 2 year machine to last an additional year, it's a done deal and I'll probably (prolly for you morons) do it again in another year.
Go away with your closed mind. I have seen both sides and chosen wisely.
...complaining about price. Shut your damn piehole.
The educational discount is a wopping $60+ Just apply for that.
I agree, get the Gamecube and make sure you get Metroid Prime. The best game ever on any console or PC.
The build number is useful because if you know of further improvements since the GM build, then you might wait to buy it. Why wait? 10.3.1 would be a download update of 10.3. And you shouldn't believe everything you read in the rumor sites. Unannounced features can be pulled without nary a word (look at minimize in place). Then not only have you been impatienetly waiting for 10.3.1 to come out, but when it does, it doesn't have the feature you read about on MOSR, and then you're like doubly pissed at apple for not including a feature that you thought was going to be in there (even though they never said so).
I'm one of those recent 15" Al users left out in the cold on the up-to-date offer. At least I can get Panther for the $69 student price although I have to order it directly from Apple as the Apple Store will only be selling the $129 / $199 copies.
I asked the original question. I wondered because I have a seed of 7B85 and want to know if that is the final build...if it is, I'm installing it now so I don't have to wait for the CDs I just ordered (I'm glad all G5s get a "free" upgrade.)
For those of you wondering if panther will support multichannel output, I can tell you that every version of DVD Player has at least supported Dolby Pro Logic (aka Dolby Surround). DVD Player has always down converted AC3 to Pro Logic. That format is transmitted over analog stereo channels as a carrier wave, so you could always use that. As far as digital surround sound (DTS, AC3, etc) I doubt that it will support it on anything but the G5, as it is the only mac with a digital sound output (optical).
I think if people went to
www.appleinsider.com>forums>macosx>"Panther" 7Bxx....
they will have their questions about the DVD & sound output answered.
Panther is worth is. The speed is their. The spinning beach ball is not. Apple seems to have removed some bottlenecks that weren't HUGE issues...but....now that my system screams as fast as OS9...I have no complaints. Only $130 for this performance?
It IS a truly rock-solid build. In fact, if you think about it....You could buy Panther One time. Buy your compatible software One time...and be done with it. Panther is that good.
Upgrading is a choice...more often than not, right?
there are smaller (but important) fields like Digital Video where I can see the need to upgrade & upgrade (as processors get faster & faster...which obviates the need for OS revisions)...but for MOST users...like 90% or so.....Quit your bitching...get it or don't get it...Get a PC or don't get a PC....
just be sure that if you get Panther...you are getting a hot product.
"I asked the original question. I wondered because I have a seed of 7B85 and want to know if that is the final build...if it is, I'm installing it now so I don't have to wait for the CDs I just ordered (I'm glad all G5s get a "free" upgrade.)"
Even if the beta you have is GM, there are internal changes to the build that signify it as a GM. The updaters and what-not will not work on betas, even if the last build is the GM version. The 10.2.1 updater will NOT work with the "GM beta build" of Jaguar.
You're still probably going to have to purchase the retail version.
Just wanted to point out that I predicted this TO THE DAY on this forum several weeks ago ...
... will expire on 12/31, btw. Just a word to the wise.
There's $30 right there. At the edu price of $69 - this is a no-brainer.
Also - anyone running the seeds on an iBook 500? Any indication of performance? Hey - it's a 500 - we need all the speed bumps we can get...
I love the threats that people are laying out about "pirate seed" builds with secret expiration dates.
What kind of pseudo-logic puts in an expiration date...for a "beta build" for a time ...after.... the public release of the "GM"?
were I a developer, I would want ALL beta copies to expire by the time my projected, & realized, release date.
for what it's worth, a friend has been installing "beta" GMs since they were available "online"...which started for him about 5 years ago....he has yet to see a "gm" release not be the same build# as what comes in the box. Nice try, dorkus maximus.
let pirates pirate...& software buyers buy software. Just don't let pirates PROFIT off software in which they never invested any true, constructive labor.
the poster above says WE CAN STEAL WOOOOOHHOOOOO
if you believe in god i think i should remind you about a certain commandment?
oh wait. i'm sure it does not apply to you.
Anyone want to bet that Norton Utilities will be broken by Panther (not sure that's the right way to put it) and it will #1 take a good week for Symantec to even acknowledge in on their web page and #2 another week or more before they have an update.
I hope I'm wrong but experience tells me I'm not.
panther's dull - get the gamecube
Apple Gov't prices are quite attractive as well. $64.50 for single user. $99.50 for the family pack. No complaints here !
"if you believe in god i think i should remind you about a certain commandment?
oh wait. i'm sure it does not apply to you. "
So those that don't believe in God can steal stuff?
That's one stupid statement.

Notice I said I had ordered the CDs...I just am installing my seed as something to keep me going until the CDs I ordered arrive. And from what I've read, 7B85 was the GM. Any "internal changes" would constitue a new build number. And also, I had the seed of the Jaguar GM as well. Same build number.
You've gotta check this site out. I am personally ordering the Panther thong for my girlfriend. She'll love it. lol.
http://www.cafeshops.com/geekcultstore/173797
what's a floppy? I haven't used a floppy in 5 to 5 1/2 years....and I've only had a Mac four years in January...
4K78 IS THE GOLD MASTER!
i normally always download the GM seeds of the major releases 10.0 / 10.1 / 10.2 ... i have *never* had a problem with them. identical to the released version... software update works... they don't expire... etc etc.
i also buy 30 copies once the CDs start shipping. for 10.2 i ended up upgrading the entire office with the "pirate" GM as Apple was backlogged on shipping the discs to me and people were really clamoring for it. Apple got their $3000... i got my $3000 piece of paper that said it was kosher to have all these copies.
as the sole IT guy in an office of Macs sometimes it's nice to have a week or two lead time to try the new release out on my personal machine to check any obvious bad incompatibilities the office would encounter and still be able to roll out the final on the actual release date.
I'm gettying the Panther Fur Classic Thong !!
Macconnection is offering .3 for 99 after rebate
Has anyone heard about the new Textedit bundled with Panther?
A floppy is what PC users have in their pants after dealing with the latest round of virus attacks on their Wintel machines. Macs don't have floppies for obvious reasons.
...screams as fast as OS9."
In my books an 'upgrade' would have had new features at the same speed or been faster with the same features... And we will now have paid 3x to get OS-X back to 0...? (Does mail read newsgroups yet?)
Apple may have been better than MS in the past but they have ticked me off enough that for the first time since I started buying computers in 1992, the last new machine I bought was a PC... After suffering with 10.1 AND 10.2...
Mac zealots that are 'HAPPY' to pay do not make sense to me...
oops, the "new point of view" looks like something i've seen on windows before. i don't like it.
Now that the only OS9 app I've got is ATI's TV USB (god, I hate ATI for being lazy asses), I look forward to wiping my HD and installing only OS 10.3.
What is this "Panther" everyone is talking about? I don't see its significance. I will just buy OS X 10.3 but not install the "Panther" part.
Sure you can do that. I'd talk to a zoo vet first though.
Just wanted to point out that I predicted this TO THE DAY on this forum several weeks ago ...
Please enjoy this Virtual Rubber Biscuit.™
but panther doesn't really impress me. Major problems with OS X's UI design still go unaddressed. The Dock has required a complete redesign since day one, yet apple continues to ignore it. It's all about expose and the wizz-bang little demo-ware features. Either that, or apple charging us for adding back in functionality we USED to have (ex: lables).
Call me a whiner, but my major problem with apple these days is that they care too much for that one gotta-have-it feature instead of the overall user interface. Expose may be cool, but in contrast, X DESPERATELY needs an unistaller, better file management (meta-data), and better file organization (instead of for example log files in 10 different places on my machine.)
... yet another day spent trying to get the da*n thing just to print from my 8 month old CAD package to my 1.5 year old HP Officejet printer on JAG... OS-X JUST DOESN'T %^$$ WORK - EVERY DAY I HAVE A PROBLEM THAT COSTS ME MONEY... I had to move the file to my XP machine to get a print...
I've dumped 80% of my Apple stock recently because they just can't get it together!!
There is a REASON the two graphic designers I know are still on 9, ticked with Adobe, giving up on Quark for X & starting to use PCs...
You my friend are a lost soul.
I am also a designer as well and am very pleased with Apple and OSX. Very.
I feel sorry for you. Having to use a PC and all.
Oh well, some people just aren't as brilliant, I suppose.
Macs are the best.
OSX is the best.
PC users are stuck using ancient code MS calls an operating system - yikes!
PC users get to use their generic, slopped together hardware.
Macintosh computers are the best thing that ever happened to the industry.
The new printing features in the preference panes etc and postscript and EPS to a raster printer and letting your inkjet function as a postscript printer on a network... can you say WOWZERS. In 2000 or so, I purchased a HP Deskjet 1220cps and PressReady. In OS 9 it worked like a champ and I got output that rivaled the Xerox color laser, with the exception of speed,.. but I was able to do my entire portfolio on it and it looked kick f*&king a$$ in quality considering it was an inkjet. Then came along OS X and PressReady still worked in Classic... to my surprise. Now I can breath new life into that old, but good inkjet with the new Colorsync and color managment in Panther,... it can now act as a postscript level 3 printer once again and even my new CX5200 all in one from epson will get a boost in features.. I mean, that and the many other features for creative and IT and more... God, the server version is coming out.. and G5 Xserves....
This 10.3 upgrade may not lift everyone's skirt, but many will be slobbering like me over the those few desired features I have been wanting for years. Oh yeah,.... Gimp Print... nuff said.
Whoozyurdaddy.... Panther's my Daddy
MacMoose
You all will laugh at this, but you know a true MacAddict when they figure out how to afford Panther by retooling their already tight food budget and such to just be able to afford it... hehe... GUILTY AS CHARGED LOL

> So those that don't believe in God can steal stuff?
pretty much, yes, except unless you think you're going to get caught (the only other deterent I know).
by they way the chances of god catching you are slim, as we all know that god lives in california and wears a turtleneck jumper
The comment here - you should have know before ordering a Powerbook that you wouldn't get an Upgrade - is a bit smug, in fact quite smug (and a bit know-it-all as well), but it's fair enough. If that's the policy, OK, I would feel better, though, if I hadn't been told SPECIFICALLY by an Apple Store salesperson that I would get a better price in upgrading froma new machine.
So, I CANCELLED my Panther order of some weeks ago.
That BS information from the Apple Store is NOT acceptable.

Apple is awesome! I will be waiting to buy 10 copies or Panther!!! WoooHoooo!!!!
