updated 12:30 am EDT, Wed October 8, 2003
Apple will bring a second store to Georgia, according to NorthFulton.com: " The Apple Store has begun a $1 million renovation of a space in , the only other Apple Store in Georgia (Atlanta). This is the first commitment of a number of electronic retail outlets that are interested in the area....No date has been set for the opening of the North Point store. Shawmut Design and Construction of Boston, Mass. is handling design and construction of the facility."

Why are both Apple stores so close? Both stores are 4.5 hours from me in Columbia, SC. (The Durham, NC Apple Store is about the same distance.) Come on Apple how about building a store in some of the states that don't have an Apple Store. I'm tired of going to CompUSA. (about a 45 minute drive) What does Apple have against SC?

Agree, but...

I agree with Steen, but it sure will be nice not to have to drive into Buckhead to visit the Apple Store. I would have thought Mall of Georgia over NorthPoint because at least that is on an interstate. These decisions are based on money though. I have only been in Atlanta 6 years, but the feeling I get is that outside of Buckhead, Alpharetta and North Fulton county are the center of wealth in the ATL.

Apple stores are located in areas that they believe will garner them the most bang for their buck. In their latest financial disclosures, Apple's CFO states that Apple will not open a retail store unless they can guarantee they will break even in the first year. With the high cost of real estate rentals where they are choosing to open these stores, that is quite a statement. How can they be so secure?
They are usurping the customer base that has been established by their longterm independent resellers, engaging in business practices that are designed to put these resellers out of business, and then stepping in and taking over. This can only work where there is a concentration of existing business. For the rest of us Apple users, we are left to do our business online or subjected to travelling where the "real" business is.
I love the design of the Apple stores and the great deals you can get there. i Hate what Apple is doing to make this a reality.
