Axis today launched "the world's smallest" high-performance network camera with a built-in IP-based Web server: the . The networked camera is about the size of a deck of cards (approximately 3.4" x 2" x 1.3") and is optimized for indoor use, providing high-quality, Motion-JPEG video at 30fps at 640x460 resolution. Users also have the option to record and store images to hard disk using the AXIS Camera Recorder software. The camera offers dual-level password protection and supports up to 20 simultaneous users.

    Is it fully compatible.

Other Axis cameras only work on Windows or in MSIE. How about this one? I would think it wouldn't be so difficult to build a web cam without MS proprietary protocols.

    Who to blame?

I have an Axis 2100 that feeds live video successfully in most OSX browsers (IE, Navigator, and Camino or Opera, I can't remember which), but not Safari. I've spent a fair amount of time communicating with Axis on why live video in Safari doesn't work. They claim to support a Java client but I was never able to get it to work in Safari. I too assume that this new camera doesn't support a live video Safari client. Does anyone have an explanation on why the Axis Java client won't fire up with Apple's browser?

    Axis 205 and Mac

I found the PDF datasheet for this camera. It does support Macs (but says limited functionality). Based on past experience with their products it will do the basics on a Mac but (as above) some Mac web-browsers will have problems.

Interestingly, the Axis 2130DS appears to be the identical hardware to the Canon VBC10. I mention this, because I found that the Canon was much more Mac compatible.

Cost wise, I eventually found a reseller website with a price for the Axis 205, it costs approx £127.99 (at a guess $100) this in my opinion is a good price but I feel the Veo Observer (not Mac compatible) is even better value.

    Safari

The problem with Safari seems to me that for some reason, Safari doesn't seem to support motion jpeg properly. It seems Safari tries to download the whole motion jpeg stream before showing it or so, but of course this does not work since it's a live stream. I'm fairly sure the bug is in Safari and not in the Axis camera web server.

    it WORKS !

It works fine using Camino, IE or Netscape using Active X video mode but not Safari (you need to use the Java video mode).

You can set the camera to use JAVA instead of Active X if you want...

Axis is making great products, easy to use and powerful.

    RE: it WORKS!

Please enlighten me on how to get "Java video mode" working. In all my conversations with Axis tech support they were never able to get it to work; and we did try to use the Java viewer. We tried several special versions of their loader code (and one that I hacked) but never did get it working. I'm inclined to believe that it's a Safari issue (and have reported it to Apple several times). I'd love to get this solved and agree that Axis makes a great product...but for now, users of my family site can't access a live video stream if they are using Safari as their browser.
