TechWeb: 'iMac users left out in cold'

updated 09:46 am EST, Thu January 11, 2001

TechWeb News has an article that says iMac users were left "out in the cold" by Tuesday's product announcements. "No announcements were made for iMac users, and officials with the Cupertino, Calif., company on Wednesday refused to comment on any plans for the low-end computer credited with increasing Apple's marketshare among consumers ..."

    Off the Mark Again

Once again, the media has decided that Microsoft is supreme and cannot be conquered... have we all forgotten that the company HAS NOT split up yet, even though the DOJ has asked them to? I believe that even though Apple is late to the game, they obviously have caught up and delivered more than any of their competitors... having only used iTunes for a day I can tell you it is some pretty hot stuff, and once all the Apple applications are ready for Mac OS X we'll be seeing some really wonderful things that Windows still cannot deliver in one complete package.

    Consumers?

Actually, the real issue is that they are now touting a Mac functionality (burn DVDs for the family) that can ONLY be accomplished by the top of the line machine. The issue is their marketing is getting more and more screwed up.. it's clear that they couldn't possibly give consumers the DVD writing ability in sub 1,000 dollar computers.. but then don't tout that feature and imply that it's aimed AT the consumers.

    So?

iMac users just got their new machines a few months ago. A company cannot and should not turn over new consumer machines quickly. Nobody would want to buy out of fear of being outdated in 3 months. If anything, the aftermarket should pick up the slack and cash in!

    iMac future unclear

    Is "no news" "good news"?
Are they trying to get us some 600+ G3s and CD-RW?
    Or a G4 "SE" model with a combo DVD/CD-RW?

I get the feeling Mac OS X really wants a G4 or two!
The cube appeals to me, but a tad too pricey!

If they could give the iMac crowd something like the old Mac LC style case in "flavors" with a single PCI slot and AGP 4x Radeon or GeForce2 MX (ideally via an AGP SLOT)would be great, this way we can have a small simple computer and get a 17" CRT to put on it. Maybe have the case be able to sit on it's side so we can use a flat screen.

Hopefully it'll be worth the wait - I'm still WOW'd with the new machines anyway! (of course they are still overpriced!)

these guys are trying to grab attention by implying that apple is neglecting imac users when really, they're just not introducing any new imacs because we just got new ones!

    Can't Win

With Apple's stock down (along with the rest of the tech industry), the 'pundits' have again come out to take a stab at their favorite punching bag.

No new iMacs - "a" had it right, we just got new iMacs. Even if iMac users can't burn CDs with iTunes, they still just got free software for ripping, playing, and interfacing with their MP3 players. This expo was about the high-end, where everyone's beaten up Apple about MHz, the Powerbook, where Apple's been beaten up about lack of a slimline, and CD-RW.

If Apple is smart here, we'll see an Apple-branded external CD-RW drive at the Apple Store by MacWorld Tokyo, with a FireWire interface. Perhaps also a USB flavor, but I find that less likely (only the lowest-end iMac lacks FW these days).

    Bash us somemore!!

I just don't get it, it was supposed to be an article about apple's iMacs but instead they touted it to be one how windows is better and everyone everywhere is going to windows...Talk about fair reporting.

I am very excited about the new products and we all know the iMac upgrades are coming, and the way they made it sound was that apple wasn't even going to upgrade the iMac becuase they wouldn't talk, but they forgot to mention that is the company's policy.

    Dumbass, all of um...

    Consumer market

I'd like to see a smaller (mini) tower that looks like the regular tower but 33% to 50% smaller. 1 or 2 slots expansion (unlike the cube) but not so "power user" expandable like the full towers. Easier to carry around (like an iMac or cube) with choice of monitor size/type. In the $899-$1299 price area.
It'd still be consumer "CUTE" and yet powerful enough for most consumers!

    Is this a big suprise?

It hasn't been that long since the iMac line received a refresh. Besides, the consumer market is pretty much saturated for the moment, so this round of announcements was targeted at professional clients...
