'Apple' name lawsuit may take years

UK newspaper The Times Online reports that "a battle over name rights between the Apple Computer and Apple Corps, the Beatles' record label, , according to Steve Jobs...Mr Jobs told The Times that the two sides' latest quarrel looks destined to be decided by a judge. He said: 'It’s really stupid. We can’t reach an agreement, but the courts could drag on for a few years.' Apple Computer and Apple Corps signed a pact a decade ago on what each can do with the name, but now disagree on its terms. Mr Jobs said: 'We’re going to have to take it to court to find out who’s right.'"

    Apple would solve this

By changing its name to Macintosh. Most PC users when they talk about Apple Computer's Macintoshes refer to them as made by Mac or Macintosh. And the spelling is distinct enough not to be confused with the raincoat.

    "Macintosh"?

Doesn't really roll off the tongue; too many syllables.

Apple Corps is just being dicky. "All you need is love" my fuzzy a**.

Give 'em h***, Steve -- and then work on your market share. We're dying out here.

    Logo

I think Apple would also have to drop the familiar Apple logo. The name is Apple Computer, which is distinct from Apple Corps.

Apple Computer built and marketed the Apple logo and brand name and therefore should be allowed to keep both.

    not a problem

Apple Computer put in audio hardware into the Mac, then recently created the music store.
Apple Corps put Beatles music on CD, then later on DVD, therefore entering the data/computer market.

Seems like a wash to me. Or if Apple Computer can't sell music, then Apple Corps can't sell digital media.
    Next case.

    Beatles who?

Beatles? When did they last make the charts in any real way? What have they done for us lately? s**** 'em.

And more, what does "Apple Corps" have to do with "Beatles"? I think *they* should be forced to rename themselves "Dung Beatles".

    Apple

Apple is simply too broad of a name for one party to have control over. I can understand having one name is needed for a specific industry, but the "Apple" is simply too vague.

Maybe Apple Corps' lawyers should attack produce companies next...

"By changing its name to Macintosh"

Naming themself after a computer? Nope. Not if they want to be perceived as a digital device company, which they are. Besides apple doesn't make Macintosh anymore. They've been Power Macintosh since at least 1995.
