updated 09:30 am EST, Thu January 11, 2001

c|net's Apple-Nvidia alliance a further blow to ATI talks about the possible impact of the inclusion of Nvidia's graphics cards in higher-end Power Mac G4s, which secures Mac users (and Apple) a second supplier of graphics cards.

    ATI blew it

ATI made great cards, but when it came time to get an update for my current G4, if you look at what the PC Radeon offers and what the Mac Radeon is, you have to scratch your head and wonder why ATI even bothered putting out a Mac version at all. I got a Voodoo 5 for my current G4, but have one of the 733's on order. Sorry, ATI...you're digging your own grave.

First, in true back asswords fasion, we have the bottom of the line nvida gear that is only available when buying a new machine. no aftermarket cards are available, announced, hinted at.. all we have is nvidia saying they don't make such cards.

The ONLY real test of this new relationship is will we see AGP/PCI versions of the N20 chip later this summer.

ATI & Apple = No More

I think we can assume that ATI's days as a supplier of Apple video chips are numbered. nVidia may not be perfect, but after the last expo, the wrath of Jobs will end the ATI alliance.

    Just this reader's opinion...

    Good news...sorta

It's time Apple put ATI on the line, ATI has always made the Mac a low priority. Maybe now ATI will get serious about Apple.

However, Apple's latest move to bundle the GeForce2 MX seems a little odd when you consider that the ATI Radeon is a more robust card. Fortunately, the Radeon is still available as a BTO option in the Apple Store.

    ATI & Apple

ATI has actually done a lot more for Mac Graphics than you guys give them credit. They wrote Apple's DVD API, have done a ton of the OpenGL groundwork so that other video card manufactures wouldn't need to put in as much work, they even updated RAVE when Apple did nothing with it. The Apple OEM deal is a very big account for them. I'm guessing ATI driver releases take so long because they have to go through ATI testing, then they have to go through Apple testing. Unfortunately, it seems they don't do as much game testing as they should.

    Show me the drivers...

The first versions of the nVidia drivers will be buggy. It'll take a few revisions for them to become stable.
