The Stillwater Board of Education approved a plan to give to use at home and school, despite requests from angry parents to delay the decision, according to Pioneer Press: "Monday night's 4-2 vote allows the school district to continue negotiations with Apple Computer on the five-year, $2.85 million proposal. The laptops would go to about 2,270 students and 135 staff members at Oak-Land and Stillwater junior high schools by next fall."

    Um

This is a dumb question, but what does exactly happen when someone loses their school iBook? Are the parents responsible, or is there a type of student work penalty or something?

    Great To See!!!

I am glad to see a Minnesota School get in on the iBook purchases. Does anyone know how much these schools are paying per iBook? I work as the Technology Coordinator/Computer Teacher for a small Catholic K-8 school in Robbinsdale, MN and we would love to get a couple of the iBook carts for our Middle School kids as well as update our lab with eMacs. In fact, we are having our annual Marathon for Non-Public Schools fund raiser and if the students reach $5,000 over their goal of $40,000 I am shaving my head. Any money over the $40,000 that we raise will go into Technology. You can check out our web site here:

and can email me at rziebol@mac.com if you want to help out!!!

    What in the world ...

... is WRONG with some of these Stillwater parents? Have they not seen the tremendous results in Herndon VA and Maine? They're fools to want to delay or cancel this, it's by far the best thing that ever happened to THAT backwater burg!

    Reasonable concren

    Read the article.

At least those parents aren't griping about some silly Mac vs Windows complaint. They're worried about spending lots of tax money to give the kids something that is so easily misplaced or damaged.

I see that as a reasonable concern. If I were a paremt in that district, I too would be thinking "desktop computers are MUCH sturdier and you get more for your money" and "Isn't there a more cost effective way to put a computer at every students' disposal, both in the schoolroom and in the home?"

    no issues

    1. there's the little thing called "insurance". Perhapse these parents have heard of it. my insurance for $10k of computer gear is $12 a year on my homeowner's insurance.. the same rate it was whe ni was an apartment renter.

    2. these parents complaining about this being "too much" for their kids.. these are the same people how have to call little Timmy or Mary to setup the TiVo or VCR? These are the people who are such luddites that they refuse to get a cell phone or are still clining to their Nokia 6100 that they got 6 years ago.

when i was in junior high - a scant 20 years ago - i was using a C64 for ALL my papers... i havent written anything other than a love letter to my wife over a page long since 6th grade.

these people need to get a grip. iBooks are not gallactically expensive items.. not when you conicider the leg up it gives kids being unafraid of technology as their parents obviously are.

my kid will be getting laptops (or whatever exists then) as soon as he goes to school. I can give my kids a heads up - just as my parents did. I make c***-loads of money now as a comm engineer - and i give all the credit to my parents for arming me with technology at a very young age. I have never been afraid to learn anything because of it.

    "I make c***-loads of money"

Must be nice to be able to say a phrase like that. I wish I made c***-loads of money.

    Awesome news!

I work in Schaumburg District 54 and am proud to have another 1-to-1 deployment announced....though not on the same scale as ours, it's awesome for both Apple and the community. We had alot of grief around here as well BEFORE the kids got the actual iBooks, now everybody is glorifying the project and calling the savoir of the Superintendent and everybody else....amazing stuff!

FYI, our district paid roughly $850/iBook and we charged each student $50 for insurance in case a replacment is needed....nobody fussed and everybody paid immediately!

    iBook loss...

There is usually an insurance fee associated with receiving one of these laptops. It covers against loss and breakage.

    Sept 11 survivors

Does anyone remember when Apple said they would donate Hardware/software to the kids whose parents died in the events on Sept 11th? How many kids received devices? Did Apple follow through? Has there been any writeups about that?
