Apple says it will continue to focus on innovation, noting that quality comes before quantity, according to The Independent. "We would like to see our market share grow," Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive, admitted to The Independent on Sunday last week at the Apple Expo held in Paris. But he argued: "Our strategy is to innovate. ."

    The Whole Widget?

I think you could go Further with your vision Apple.

The market is very boring right now. Why don't you Innovate •truly• & •profoundly• & •elegantly• instead of just occasionaly...and often a bit late. You, Apple, certainly come out with some punch...but follow thru weakly. Late or postponed releases for certain products....long delays in releasing true WOW architectural changes to your desktop line (or any other line of PCs for that matter.)

Do it Apple. Go for it. s**** the Widget, just do something INTERESTING & TRULY DIFFERENT in the market.

    thanx.

    I would agree

I think Steve is too humble. Apple manages to innovate in an industry dominated by an ethics- free monopoly.

My very first service call ever, about a problem with WordPerfect running in DOS on an IBM 386 led the exact scenario he described; finger pointing. The only thing that's changed: the calls now cost an astounding amount of money, and are answered by a guy in India who lays it off on one of the other mfg.s. I guess the only other thing that's changed is a PC is now easier to operate now that it has a GUI strikingly similar to the Mac's.

    good software

There used to be this great software application called "Widget Works." I wonder if it'll be carbonized?

    Whole widget my a**

Apple's making the "whole widget" doesn't make a better product. They still couldn't seem to get OS X to work satisfactorily on the first and second generation G3's. Its real funny how DVD Playback can work under OS 9, but won't under OS X.

I guess the whole widget works best when you buy completely new hardware every 2.5 years.

    Gah.

I've never really understood why you guys are so bent out of shape about the DVD playback thing. I could understand if it wasa on a PowerBook, but I hate watching DVD's on the computer.

I mean, I prefer sitting on the couch and watching DVD's on our 32" TV with 5.1 surround sound instead of on my 17" monitor and computer speakers.

    What's wrong with DVD's

My son watches a movie on a first generation Ti (which is old enough that I would like to upgrade but won't yet) every single night. What is the problem?

    Maybe you bought cheap RAM?

    playing DVDs...

should have nothing to do with cheap RAM. I do believe the original whiner was correct in that there are some G3s that won't play DVDs in OS X still. has something to do with hardware vs software based decoding IIRC. c'est la vie, computers don't last forever and after some point you have to stop expecting everything to be perfectly supported by the newest software

    G3's

Beige and Blue & White G3's, as well as Wall Street and Lombard PowerBook G3's use hardware-based video decoding. No DVD Player under OS X for them.
