Apple's QuickTime chief to transform its proprietary Windows Media 9 multimedia software into a standard, according to Macworld UK: "When you are part of a standards organization you don't develop it behind closed doors," Casanova said. The report notes that Microsoft earlier this month submitted its Windows Media 9 a/v codec to the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) for review and ratification of its software as a standard: "Casanova believes Microsoft has not frozen development of its software while waiting for ratification [and is] critical of Microsoft's approach to standards development."

    sadly this is true

and i despise their bastardization of the MPEG codec. still, hollywood is more in tune with apple, this isnt especially worrying YET.

    Apple still king here

Microsoft is trying to muscle in on Apple's key market. Apple will do what it takes to keep their lead here. They are too well positioned for Microsoft to take it away from them. Windows Media Player with its horrible digital rights and quality issues, will have to make a lot o changes before it can overtake quicktime.

Don't forget quicktime is on the windows platform as well. It isn't just for Mac.

    WMP is awful

It runs so poorly. When compared to QT in high end environments is blows. Period. Qt is faaaaaaaaast.

    Man...

    Pot, meet, kettle.

Both wmv9 and QT are based on MPEG-4. Who is one to call the other a bastardization? Where is QT support for HD content? Are there any HD DVDs out based on QT like there is with wmv9?

I am not being Gate's b**** here but just a devil's advocate. Where's the 5.1 surround sound codec for QT? Where's mathematically lossless audio compression?

Pixlet looks like a formidable competitor but it is not out yet.

As for DRM, I won't touch that with a 9 foot stick.

    M$

They do as they please and the guvnent will not do what is necessary to halt the b*******. My assessment - no matter how much better QT may or may not be - M$FT will prevail and all will have to eat from their bowl. Shame, the consumer will loose again to the 'standards' set by a monopoly like M$ Gates.

    I think you're mistaken

If I'm not mistaken, MPEG-4 is based on QT, and MS uses it's own version of MPEG-4 that does not fully comply (and that I think relates to DivX or 3ivX somehow).

    Hu?

I thought that Microsoft's wma/wmv was its own proprietary built codec? Well at least for wma I know that it is their own codec that they built. ehhh

Yes, MPEG4 was based on QT. It has changed sufficiently enough that MPEG4 is now its own standard, if you will. Apple modified it and calls it Quicktime and charges $. Microsoft modified it and calles it WindowsMedia whatever and charges $. Real midifies it and call it RealVideo and charges A$. DivX also modifies it and charges $. Every company says their implementation is the best (as in best looking and best implementation of MPEG4) and chrages $ for commercial use. There are some open source development out there but they are relatively small. Helix from Real can be developed as a open source, however (like Mozilla and Netscape).

Anyways, I wrote the original pot v kettle settlement. I do not think it is a given that WMV will win. However, they did have a headstart by having the v9 codecs out for a while and has features that Hollywood wants. I am hoping Pixlet will win or give it a run for its money but there is not just a lot of information on it yet.

My point is: when I head one company calling the other company names, my eyes just glaze over, even when it is our favorite whipping boy - Microsoft.

Apple is not exactly developing QT with an open door either.
