updated 08:35 pm EST, Wed January 10, 2001

Proteron (booth #4336) today announced the release of N2MP3 Pro 1.0, an update to its MP3 creation application. N2MP3 offers a suite of audio codecs, including the Fraunhofer's industry standard encoder, the open-source LAME encoder, Proteron's proprietary MPegger engine optimized for Apple's G4, and for the first time on the Macintosh, Ogg Vorbis open-source codec. The $60 application preforms real-time recording to MP3 files and offers support for CDDB2 from Gracenote and uncompressed AIFF and WAV files. It is a $20 upgrade for registered 1.x owners and $30 upgrade from Mpegger. A demo is availabe online.

    hmmmm, let me think...

should I spend $60 on N2MP3 or open my iDisk and install iTunes for free?

    Actually...

I have yet to try 2.0, but 1.0 of N2MP3 is actually easier to use and a more refined product than iTunes. To me, iTunes has a clunky interface compared to just being able to open a CD, and drag the file out of there onto a folder or desktop and have it MP3'd as if it were being copied. Really slick. I'll wait for iTunes 2.0 to see if it improves, personally.
