At his IBC Keynote, Apple's Phil Schiller offered a sneak preview of a pre-release version of as well as demos of Shake 3 and DVD Studio Pro: "some 500 excited visitors made the short walk from the RAI exhibition centre to the Okura Hotel to attend a keynote speech by Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing. Schiller used the occasion to demonstrate Apple’s suite of professional post-production software applications, and to re-assert the company’s ongoing commitment to the professional creative markets."

I just upgrade my FCP from 1.2 to FCP 4 finally. I yet to get my Dual G5 aqnd it looks like I'm going to have to buy a new copy of FCP?

Now this sucks.. It better be free or cheap for sure.

    Don't jump to conclusion

Where did it say that Apple is charging for the G5 optimized version? You accuse Apple of making you buy a new copy of FCP, then strangely say, "It better be free." Make up your mind. Either you have no idea whether or not it's going to be free (meaning you can't accuse Apple of forcing you to buy a new copy yet), or you have some anger issues you need to deal with. Perhaps both.

    Oh for the love of...

    What now!!

What is up with Apple... I just got back from a presentation not long ago, an Apple Rep. told me as I asked him when to expect my G5+all the extras I ordered... He then said another 2 weeks (all in all 4-5 weeks for a 1.8Ghz), but I could get my software before if I wish it. How brilliant of him to say that, when I have no computer to install it on. Then about 40min later he asked me, so you bought a G5? Are you excited? I would be he said and told me he saw a pre-release of FCP4. One that is optimized for a G5. So I asked him, is that what I am getting? You ordered one? (We talked about that 40min ago.) I said yes, he then said he doubts it as it has not yet been announced. But that if I had FCP4, it would only cost me the upgrade!!!!! NO F... WAY, I can't believe it, forced me to by it and then says it will not run optimal on a G5... Way to go Apple, you managed to F me again...

    Oh and...

By forcing me to buy it, I mean, I didn't have much choice but to believe them when I bought a G5 that all that would be a perfect marriage... Why? Well that was his sales tactic, I mean he sold me the G5 on the basis of what I needed, FCP4 and DVD studio Pro, then says later what he sold me was c***... Great...

I had to buy a computer that could do the biz I needed it to do, but don't ask me to throw in another 1500 bucks on a software that does not work well on a G5!!!! h*** my FCP3 would have been just as good...

    I bet it's free

The article says specifically that it was an optimized version of FCP 4. I bet this will be something like FCP 4.1 which will simply be a free downloadable update.

Don't get your panties in a bunch quite yet.

Spoke with an Apple rep - the price for the upgrade will be $399.00.

Just kidding - I bet it will be free as well.

As Drew Carey would say: "Lighten up people!"

    When you buy a computer

When you buy a computer that is on the bleeding edge, sometimes you have to accept some blood / pain.

If you want to make sure that you will have a smoother transition to the G5, wait a few months. This is true of every big computer upgrade; Mac, Win, whatever.

Should Apple do what they can to be fair - sure. Should they give away the house... no. If you buy a computer or software and they come out with a better one the next day, your purchase is no less valuable... there are just better options than what you had. Nature of the game, kids. Deal with it.
