Mac OS X: an option that's enterprise-worthy

updated 11:30 pm EDT, Sat September 13, 2003

Writing his first column after . Perhaps the most compelling reason to consider Mac OS X is astoundingly simple: It’s a Unix-based system that runs software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. First and foremost, overall security is much easier to tackle than with Windows...The 'it just works' quality of Mac OS X also saves a lot of time and frustration -- what your pro-Mac friends and colleagues have been telling you is definitely true."

Thank you, Infoworld ...

... for telling me the BLOODY OBVIOUS.

I love the way these PC magazines are, one by one, discovering like Columbus that (gasp) what we've been telling them for years now is TRUE! Whodathunkit?!

I guess the PC world is like my dad ... you can tell him Macs are better until you're blue in the face, show him demonstrations et al and it falls on deaf ears ... but until a TOTAL STRANGER who's alleged to be an "expert" says so, then suddenly it's gospel.

Didn't Dilbert call this "consultant syndrome?" You pay somebody an extraordinary amount of money to come in from the outside and tell you what your field-level employees have been telling you for years?

Panther Next Up!!

09/14, 03:58am reply

If these PC to Mac switcher fanatic types think the Mac is cool now, wait until they check out Panther! I'm running a pre-release that is still a few revs from GM and I'm at least twice as productive as I was last week!! Oh, and I also have a PC (a fast one) running XP which I truthfully really, really loathe now. I just can't get anything done on it since getting into hyper productive mode running Panther. I basically turn it on and run updates then turn it off.

IT Dones On Board?

09/14, 10:42am reply

When the IT drones start singing the praises and pushing for Mac OS X rather than Windows, that's what we've been waiting for. They've been the real stumbling block for Macintosh lack of acceptance and decline. The sowers of myth and misinformation. After all, their jobs are at stake, too! Macs ARE evil if your paycheck could be imperiled.

The author's first-hand Mac use and conversion makes perfect sense. I've shown many people what I do with my Mac, they're impressed but remain skeptical. It's a Mac-Head at work, he knows all about it. What do I?

When they sit down and actually do what they do with a Mac and experience the ease and advantages, that's when it sinks in. Like the articles, it's over time, not just sitting down for a few hours.

My girlfriend was a devout PCer. She scoffed at, in her words, my Mac "fixation". She started using my PowerBook. And using it and using it. Sitting in bed reading checking email and reading the NY Times wirelessly is a treat for her. Now, I even hear her telling people to buy Macs, not PCs!

Could all this be a trend?
Let's hope!
