MacNN reader Jeff Rew has posted of the Apple Store in Richmond, VA: "Quite a few people there. It opened with a cheer of "APPLE! APPLE! APPLE!" News crews were inside too. The Apple store was the only one in the entire mall with a line in front of it. (The mall itself opened today too.)"

So long MacPro (McPro)!

All I have to say is WOW! Richmond FINALLY has it's own Apple shop to call home, one that doesn't require that customers PREPAY for products readily available at other stores! If you walk in to the new Apple store, it seems amazingly simple and elegant. Wonder why shops like MacPro (www.macprosolutions.com) just don't get that?!

The place was packed, and everything was on display. It was nice to see the old MacPro people working the floor at Apple too - you guys are what make that kind of store great, and you'll continue to get my business!

Way to go Apple!

The stores aren't for us

They're for switchers and less informed types. I'd never buy my Mac at the Apple retail stores. I'd just go to kick the tires. Less informed PC/Mac users would buy--and do buy--in the stores.

Richmond has fewer people

Richmond only has about 250,000 people. The Hampton Roads area dwarfs that number. We have nearly 2 million people here. Why won't Apple pull their head out of their butt and put a store at Norfolk's MacArthur Center? Why won't they listen?

Go Richmond!

According to this: http://intranet.grpva.com/intranet/WEB2002/textweb_srs/Populationx_r_txt.asp there are about 1 million people in the greater Richmond metro area. Plus it will draw from Petersburg, Charlottesville, and Williamsburg.

Yeah, the Apple chants was kinda corny... but it did draw the attention of other shoppers that were there for the rest of the mall opening.

I met a number of people there who had come from Charlottesville, Norfolk, Portsmouth, etc. It's great to finally have the store in town; I was getting tired of driving to Northern VA.

Why we got an Apple Store

Best I can figure is that Apple put a store in Richmond because Henrico County (The county that surrounds Richmond to the North) has given every middle and high school student (Around 20,000) ibooks. I'm guessing they hope that parents will be tempted to switch since that's what they're using in school.
And why did someone reply with "f*** Richmond"?

Why do you feel that way? You can find people in those stores with more knowledge of the systems than at other places. Also, if I understand correctly, you can get systems customized there w/o having to order on the web Apple Store. And it's all right there, no shipping.

I've been a mac user for a long time, but liking apple has almost become some kind of insane self-help group. Apple employee's giving high fives to customers as they walk in? WTF is up with that?

I like apple and I like their style, but sometimes I wonder if they just do such things as a desperate way to hold on to the faithful even as they s**** them over with .Mac and the like.

I went this afternoon to the new Apple store after having a horrific experience with the local retailer (MacPros) and was shocked at how knowledgeable the people there were about video (FCP to be exact). The local retailer guys were not very knowledgeable and could not demo any of Apple's pro software, but this young guy at the Apple store was whizzing through the pro apps like a, well, pro. I then asked one of the sales specialists if there was any other place local to get Apple products and he said, "CompUSA, that's it". I asked him about the other two local delears (MacPros and Capital Macs) and he said that they didn't have that big of a committment to the Mac and that they were being "phased out". I proceeded to tell him of my experience just recently and he just laughed, saying "and that's why we're here, to make sure you don't have a bad experience when purchasing our products". So, I guess the middleman is pretty much out of the picture now, at least for Richmond and the surrounding area. R.I.P. local Apple dealers!

Not uncommon

I feel your pain in regards to your experience, MacPro (not MacPros) burned our entire company on a rather large deal, and when things got ugly, we found out that almost the entire sales team had quit along with one of the managers. Definitely a shady operation they have their at MacPro, I would advise driving the extra couple of miles and visiting the Apple Store, now that we have one. A little background, MacPro is actually Mediacom renamed, so if you've ever had a bad experience with Mediacom, don't expect a change in treatment with the new guys. They used to be in a business park in South Richmond, and it looks like it's headed back to the park from the way things have been going for them.

Live and learn I guess.

Why is there nothing within driving distance from here? I mean, in most cases, we're talking several states, or at least two days of driving to get to a frickin Apple store from here. It sucks...

Yet, San Diego had multiple stores, Orange County has multiple stores, etc...

WTF?

I guess Apple thinks we only use confederate money down here in the south..

Capitol Mac

I was shocked to read that an Apple salesperson would recommend COMPUSA. I just recently purchased a 17" iMac from Capitol Mac on Main Street. I have purchased from Capitol Mac for years. They vanished for a bit, but regardless they are back in action. I was appauled that someone would claim that "Capitol Mac is not committed to Macs". I can't speak for MacPro as I have not yet been out there. I stopped by Capitol Mac today to pick up a bag for my daughter's computer and by the looks of it they were hardly "phasing out". The place was busy with all the students being back at VCU. Go Capitol Mac, I stand behind you.

CompUSA is a joke....

when it comes to purchasing Apple products. The associates at CompUSA are lousy and hardly any of them know anything about Apple products. I was over their about three weeks ago looking to purchase a 17inch Powerbook. The Apple in store rep was very cocky and when he found out that I was not interested in AppleCare he just walked off and left me in the hands of a CompUSA sales associate who didnt have any idea of what the ***k he was talking about. Both the Apple Rep and the sloppy fat looking CompUSA salesman can rest assured that I will never go to CompUSA again to purchase anything Apple related. Nevertheless, I went ahead and purchased my 17inch Powerbook book directly from Apple with AppleCare and many other extras. By the way the Richmond Apple store is very nice. The sales associates their actually know what they are talking about.

You are right when you say Compusa is not the best place in the world to go to purchase Apple related products due to the fact that they have a limited selection. The AppleRep at the Richmond Compusa store is very knowledgeable and help make the switch from PC to Mac very easy for my wife and I. I havent been to the new AppleStore yet but I was told that it is awesome! I will see for myself on Sunday.

I dropped $2088.68 for a 23" LCD monitor. If my G4 would support two, I go drop $2088.68 again for another LCD. I'm in Apple heaven. (note: Apple heaven, not the 10 commandant heaven in Alabama).

the reason there is an Apple store in richmond and not norfolk is because in Henrico(the county in the richmond area that the store is in)all of the public schools give their students iBook's so their is a huge market available there for Apple
