Apple has posted a members, offering the ability to select any folder on any hard drive as a destination for your backup, including external FireWire hard drives, network servers, or even an iPod. It also features the ability to schedule these backups, adds support for third-party CD and DVD drives, and expands CD and DVD support beyond Apple-supplied internal optical drives to many third-party drives. It also lets you mix different optical disk types in a single backup set. It is only available to .Mac members and requires Mac OS X 10.2.6.

"The Backup Beta software will terminate automatically on January 31, 2004. All backup functionality will be disabled and you will receive an out-of-date alert instructing you to go to .Mac for the latest update."

"After January 31, 2004, you can access your backups to iDisk, CD, or DVD with any version of Backup or in the Finder (press the Control key and click your backup package, then select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu). You can only access "Back Up to Drive" backups using the Finder."

    Great!

Bout time, but very welcome! I just renewed, and was wondering what "new stuff" the .Mac people would get. So far, I'm feeling pretty good about having renewed. I never thought I'd say this, but .Mac has turned out to be a really good deal for me.*

*those 100 free Kodak prints REALLY made the deal for me. YMMV.

    nope

i would rather have my photos on a dvd and make a nice presentation when i want to see them, i put photos away and never look back at them. I can easilt copy the dvd and give to family members etc, dvd's are pretty cheap now, easier to move, and you can store all the images on dvd for later print outs on the photo printer at the sizes i need...

    Not So Great!!!

Just downloaded and installed the beta of Backup. It finds the idisk server then hangs. Running 10.2.6 on a powerbook g4. Thank god for force quit! Guess it should have been tested more properly...

    Better...

I haven't run Backup 2 yet (just DL'd it) so can't report......But I did just get Sticky Brain 2 for free and a pile of other stuff recently. OK, so I never would have paid for SB since it's not the sort of App I ever seem to be able to get into using but for free I may well make the extra effort.... :-)

Actually I pissed and whined terribly about .Mac going "paid" but to be honest I'm starting to change my mind. It isn't that expensive - I have spent more on Curries this year than on .Mac so............

.Mac's backups etc. and storage have saved my arse a number of times and have made things much easier when syncing etc. as I have to update my PowerBook every time I go on a trip.

Well, it's at least one thing that I think Apple is starting to do right.

    iPod BU at last

WOW! Apple is really starting to listen and embrace end user feedback!

The save to iPod et al option is the icing on the cake. An excellent beta, which bodes really well for the GM release!

so i guess you missed the whole "public BETA" portion of the title, right? in other words, "give us feedback, but you've been warned."

I agree with the first poster... I found 2 ugly bugs within 5 mins of using it (and immediately sent off feedback), so it seems this thing could've used more QA before they let it out the door.

When something is in beta, you are part of the QA. You should be prepared to accept it could crash, or wipe out the data you are backing up (or even other data). If you are not able to accept this, do not use the beta and wait until the release version. However, good for you for sending feedback.

    warning

For those who fear upgrading, check out the last line...

Before Using Backup 2 Public Beta
Please read the accompanying Read Me file and End User License Agreement. Since beta software is incomplete, it should not be used in a commercial operating environment or with important data. Backup 2 Public Beta has not been tested with all external devices. Backup 2 Public Beta replaces earlier versions of Backup on your hard drive and it may be difficult to revert to an earlier version.
