    Best *nix out there?

Mac OS X is slowly shaping up to be the best *nix out there. Good move. With HP and Sun losing focus on Unix and putting more effort into their x86 strategy, Apple has a great opportunity to win over ex-HP and Sun customers that don't buy into the "one standard fits all" mentality Intel and Microsoft would like them to.

I really hope that G5 based supercomputer Virginia Tech is building runs Mac OS X and makes it onto the top500 list for this year. They say it may rank in the top 5 for performance. What a great story that would be for Apple, the G5 and Mac OS X.

    Read the article

If you read the article, it specifically states that X11 will be included as an optional install.

haha, not all of the world writes the the date like they do in the US. 3/9/03 = 9/3/03. Hopefully that was just a really bad joke.

    How about a freakin'...

Honest to god package manager? One that controls upgrading and downgrading. Installs AND *gasp* uninstalls? How about a more robust Packagemaker and command line tools for building packages? How about letting third parties use Software Update (or build a similar mech) for letting people keep their software (especially unix-based software) current?

Sure, there are probably open source tools out there, but this seriously needs to be part of the OS

Listen Mr. Win troll, we don't need an "honest to god package manager".

On a Mac it is drag to the disk to install, drag to the trash to un-install. No need for a package manager or install "wizard" (what a c*** name btw). That's win c***. We reallz have no use for that.

The only installer we need is the OS X system installer and that one works fine.

Drag to install? Are you sure that always works: what if the application needs to install local library files or similar things in locations other than the application folder? I think the first poster is correct - it would be great to improve the managment functions for installed software. Why shouldn't there be a central software update capability for all apps?
