Apple No. 5 with 7 percent of notebook market
updated 02:30 am EDT, Wed September 3, 2003
Apple was with 7 percent marketshare, behind Dell (27%), HP (20%), Toshiba (10%), and IBM (9%), according to CNET News.com: "Statistics published Tuesday by IDC show that industrywide notebook shipments rose by 22.4 percent globally on a year-over-year basis during the second quarter and grew by 1.5 percent from the first quarter. Meanwhile, shipments in the US grew by 18 percent year over year and by 8 percent sequentially."

We will see that increase

If IBM can make a mobile G5 chip for the laptops. A relatively low cost 64-bit laptop would be nice to have coupled with 4 GB of RAM. One could do some serious music, video or image editing on the fly with that thing.
Time will tell.

is not important. Who cares if Apple has a 7 percent market share ? This is insignificant, right ? I mean, come on, every time some study shows that the overall market share of Apple computers, which keeps going down by the way, is low, you always get smart people saying that it is like comparing the average car and BMW's.

If this is closer to Apple's real market share. There are is a lot of funny numbers out there that don't include the Mac that you bought four years ago and you are still using because it works perfectly well while the person who buys a PC and in two years it's sitting in a closet while he buys another. How about the way they count the Barebonez case that came with OEM Windows even though the user is going to put Linux on it.
It's completely right, the market share % is a joke.
This number is only regarding numbers sold of laptops. The number means what it means. It's regarding the manufacturer, not the OS. If Apple has 7% of that then what is their REAL market share?
By the way, Apple's market share is closer to what BMW and Mercedes combined if you compare it to the auto market. The only problem is the rest are a mixture of different autos that all use defective Microsoft engines that can be affected by a hacker at will.

As long as Apple maintains enough market share to be profitable (which they are) and to keep mainstream software titles available (which they are), then that's all that matters. It doesn't matter to me what other users choose; I only care that my choice remains available. There is a strong enough base of Mac users to keep the company going for a long time.

Next time you go to Star Bucks (as I do here in Dallas), you might note how all of the PC laptop users are connected to a power outlet. I have yet to notice anyone working off the battery on a PC unit. The Mac PowerBook users, on the other hand, rarely plug in. And when we connect to the phone outlets at Star Bucks, we don't even bother to plug into the power outlet.
That is because those Dells and HPs have to stay close to a power outlet to work without draining the battery in less than an hour or two.
And of course, those PCs all look the same and have ugly design and even uglier operating systems. It is like driving a clunky Chevrolet compared to the finesse, fun factor and style of a Porsche.
My Ti G4 is a work of art that performs flawlessly in presentations, uploads and downloads large files to ftp sites, creates business documents that any platform can open in either a Microsoft program or Adobe etc. Nothing in the PC world works so long, so easily and with greater flexibility in most any environment as does the Mac PowerBook.
Isn't it great to have a choice and work with the finest portable computers ever made!!!

Nicely put. iBooks are pretty nice, too.
Note: Try Mishka's Cafe, and Common Grounds coffee shops in Davis, CA. You'll love the free wireless, and of course, the coffe.
