Fortune: Apple iMac, iBook offer best value

Fortune's recommends buying the a PC based on the school's recommendation: "If the school prefers one brand or model of computer (and you don't already have a PC), go with what's recommended: Technical assistance will almost certainly be easier to come by. If the school has no preference, the best value comes from Apple, even though prices tend to be higher than for most Windows-based computers. The 17-inch Apple iMac with SuperDrive ($1,799 and up) is a space-saving beauty. On the portable side, I'd pick the 14-inch Apple iBook ($1,499)."

    still reads anti-Mac

Not really very favorable to Apple. The article makes it sound like the least expensive Mac is $1799!! They then proceed to compare it to a $579 (after $100 mail in rebate) Dell Dimension 2400 which has a slow 5400RPM 40GB hard drive and a low grade 17" CRT and DOES NOT have a CDRW drive. If they were being fair then they would compare that Dell system to an eMac instead of the high end 17" LCD G4 iMac with Superdrive.

    great comps but...

id have to say the imac doesn't have great value right now. for where it's specs are currently, the imac should be hundreds of dollars cheaper.

    The iMac is getting old

Seems like the iMac design is due for a reboot any time now. Hard to believe Steve let it stay this long.
