Apple delays G5 shipments to late September
updated 02:10 am EDT, Fri August 29, 2003
Several MacNN readers note that Apple has delayed its dual-2GHz Power Mac G5 shipments from the original "end of August" ship date: "I ordered my dual 2.0GHz G5 seconds after it became available after it became available on the Apple store. Up until about 5:00pm today (8/28) it was listed with an estimated ship date of Aug. 29. Tonight, I checked the site and they've given a new estimated ship date of September 26! Quite a change for one day!" New orders at the have an estimated ship date of "4-6 weeks". Update: One reader says his ship date was changed back to on or before August 29th without any explanation: "Order status started out today as 'on or before (OOB) 8.29.03', then late evening date changed to 'OOB 9.26.03' and then after 12 AM PST order status changed back to 'OOB 8.29.03'! Order placed minutes after APPLE STORE updated for G5 orders."

Sigh

For f***'s sake. I ordered mine the day after they were announced. If Apple US are delaying again then it means Apple UK will be even worse. How bloody difficult is it to announce a product and then ship it on time? It's not rocket science. If it wasn't ready they should have just not announced it. Such scant regard for customer confidence...........

You mean it will be slower than some other computer that will ship 8-12 weeks from then?

The G5's ARE shipping by the end of August, but the most important buyers get them first. Thats usual!
What did you expect? Apple to ship 100.000 G5's in 3 days?

Wondering

How come no Macnn user has yet called you all whiner ? This is typically the kind of answer you get when criticizing Apple on these comment forums. Glad no one has said that yet.
This leaves me wondering about how Apple is handeling his customers ? Why on Earth say the G5 will be shipping end of August if this isn't true for most of the people who intend to or have ordered new Power Macs ? This is bad PR I think. I sincerely wish there was some competition among Macintosh computers. Sure Mac clones did canibalize Apple's sales but at least, Apple had to react to keep its customers. I feel like Mac users are Steve Jobs's little puppets. I personally think Steve Jobs has done his work which was to bring Apple back on track. As far as saying he should remain in power at Apple, I'm not too sure. Apple should have known, Apple was quite aware that the demand for a new Power Macintosh the performances of which would outbeat those of the PCs was enormous and that as soon as the G5 would have been announced, orders would come rushing in. Apple has clearly shown it was unable to foresee and to react in time. Even the G4 orders on the Apple Store are stuck ! This is so unworthy of a company like Apple.

Has to be a reason...

The way I see it, there has to be a reason for this delay. I understand people getting a bit upset (rightfully impatient would be a better wording), and I admit I'm one of them. But I also know Apple wouldn't casually delay the line without a damned good reason. Think about it, all the PC weenies are just dying to latch on to something bad about the new product line... Another month delay would certainly give some ammo. Let's hope the delay is nothing more than a glitch. I know I am!
