Confirmed, Power Mac G5 Dual 2 GHz Models Ship End of August: On Your Mac Life last night, Apple G5 product manager Todd Benjamin stated that the Dual 2-GHz Power Mac G5s are still on track to ship by the end of August. We can't wait to get ours!

perhaps they are shipping a small wave of what's available to save face and meet the deadline, even though they can't meet full availability of the peak of initial demand for the duals. Even not knowing exactly what was coming, there was a lot of anticipation for this...

I just wish I had the problem of worrying about a ship date...

A jaded person might suspect that Apple knew before yesterday that they would not be able to ship the orders promised for today (mine was ordered the day of the G5 announcement) and yet let their customers once again swing in the wind (just like they did when they suddenly changed the date for those waiting for 17" powerbooks).

It's bad business. It's bad for Apple. It does not help. The b******* could have written an email saying that they needed more time to ship the G5's. But as customers we don't even rate that.

The fact is that Apple treats any customer as an annoyance. If there was some way to fight back I would be glad to hear it.

I seriously wonder if someday Apple will actually ship a new computer on time. When Steve says "available today"...he should be saying "preorder today, you should have it within 3-4 months". Now I know that for the G5s he said August, which for a very select fews orders, they got them...but now the dual 2's are delayed a good month. It will be interesting to see how long it will take for buyers to get another note saying end of October. It would be so nice to get everyone together and not preorder and let Apple have it for dragging us along always...like that would ever happen.

Obviously it's annoying if you ordered a dual G5 the day they were released if you don't get yours the day they start delivering but you can't expect apple to get 60,000 machines out on the same day. When Apple said they'd ship G5's by August they knew they wouldn't be able to ship ALL orders by then - and so should anyone ordering. The same thing happened to me in 2001 with the first TiBooks - be patient, you'll get your machines soon and they'll be worth waiting for, I just wish I was lucky enough to be in your positions.

There is a way to announce your displeasure. When you call and place an order make sure that the order taker places a "fill or kill" notice for the date it is supposed to ship. That way if that date comes without shipment, then Apple must kill or cancel the order. Now, if the 100,000 people who pre-ordered had done that, Apple would now have 100k dead orders and no back orders. If you didn't give them a 'fill or kill' order you would move up in line accordingly.

In the days where corporations will lie to their customer base (RealPC anyone?) it isn't far-fetched to think that maybe IBM was alittle off on their promises to get the G5 to Apple, hence the delay. Apple may have been going off of what IBM told them and when they could get chips to them, and now they may be telling Apple it could be a little longer. Building something as complex as a G5 computer takes a lot of different parts from a lot of different manufacturers, and as we all well know, the world is filled with idiots, some who managed to get into top-level positions at major corporations.

It may have been Apple's error, it may have been IBM's error, h*** -- it may have been some Taiwanese dude's fault. Just remember, it could have been your fault -- the world is filled with idiots and you and I are probably two of them.

Back in June because then it WAS the fastest computer. If they had waited till they could actually SHIP then they wouldnt have been able to make that claim.

Might cancel my order and wait for RevB, it should only be a month or two away from when the RevAs actually ship now...

I'm sure I speak for a lot of folks who like myself ordered their G5s within 24 hours of announcement... The reason I'm very angry right now is not so much that the ship date slipped. Maybe there's a problem in the line, maybe the east coast black out was a factor. It happens. What is infuriating and the reason why I would join anyone who is yelling at Apple right now is that they waited until 8/29 to make the change. I find it difficult to believe that they didn't know until midnight on 8/29 that this was going to happen. Apple folks were quoted in multiple places saying shipping was "on schedule." A hint, so we could have planned our projects accordingly, would have been nice.

We have already received ours which was ordered the day of the keynote.

Anyone who expected Apple to ship ALL G5 orders by the end of August is an idiot. When a company says that they will START shipping in August then you should only expect them to start shipping in August. Apple has indeed started shipping.

You have no justification for complaining about alleged delays that have not occurred.

There has not been any change for my order. It still says that my standard config Dual 2Ghz PowerMac will ship today, August 29.

For those who say that their ship date has slipped, can you tell us exactly what you ordered? Was it a standard config or a BTO?

Also tell us when you ordered, the original ship date, and the new ship date.

Sure, we know they are shipping the 1.6 and 1.8 G5s. But the bulk of the orders are for Dual 2.0 G5s.

If they couldn't ship a significant amount of G5s (and it appears they wont) they should have told us as soon as possible. I persoanlly feel they are telling a LOT of half-truths. Little things like shipping 1-2% of the G5s and claiming in the press that they are on target, etc.

Yes, G5s are shipping, but not Dual G5s. (I have yet to hear ONE person who said their Dual G5 has shipped)

I would prefer that they had told me sooner, before I got my hopes up. My credit card got charged yesterday, then my order gets moved back a month. I will have to double-check that they credited my card.

A very frustrating experience.

I ordered from the online Apple Store on 6/23/03 12:47 pst. The estimated ship date changed this morning (8/29/03) from "on or before 8/29/2003" to "on or before 9/26/2003".

I ordered the BlueTooth Module, Airport Extreme Card, and ATI Radeon 9800 Pro.

I am hopeful that, with the delay, Apple will introduce their BlueTooth keyboard and mouse and give me the option to upgrade prior to shipping my computer.

Oh brother. His Steveness said the lower two models would be shipping in mid august. The duals by the end of august. Do you people actually think the word "Shipping" is fairly defined as "every machine expected to be sold will be in customers' hands" or perhaps is it fairer to think that the product will be shipping to and/or available to parties outside of Apple....retail channel, schools, etc.???

If, the production run has started, and some have come off the assembly line on the way to customers by the dates specified, they are SHIPPING. The lower two were SHIPPING in the middle of the month, and apparently SOME of the duals are now SHIPPING or will be sometime today. My calendar says August hasn't ended.

Talk about creating a problem that doesn't exist....

I was attending an Apple seminar, in Sweden, today (about FCP 4). An Apple employee said that he had fresh news that said the dual G5 was going into production next week. Though, I don't know how accurate his information is...

I'm almost about to cancel my order and wait for the next rev...

The official order date for my dual 2GHz G5 says 06/23/2003 at 12:18 PM PST. The first specific shipping date that appeared for order status was Sept. 2. A few weeks later, Apple changed the date and upgraded the shipping to priority overnight. That new date was 8/29. Last night, the ship date changed to 9/26. Today, it says 9/29. This is the 3rd tower in a row that I've ordered from the Apple Store, only to have them miss the last possible ship date, and I'm a mathematics professor, i.e., educational person.

What if Steve waited until Apple had a warehouse full of these things before announcing? How many people would have given up on Apple if summer had come and gone without any G5 announcements? Would you rather Steve have waited? Would you rather pay a higher price to pay for Apple to build up a warehouse slowing filling with PowerMacs over August and September, just so you can have a new Mac just days after an announcement in October?

Or is it better to just accept that there are manufacturing delays and get yours when it is ready?

wish I had the cash for one of those duals .. I would love to be complaining right now :)

Apple does this all the time and each time it happens, you whine about it like it is something new. If you think you are going to get yours by Sept 26, you are kidding yourselves.

Once you do get it, you will be whining again because it truly is a beta product and doesn't perform to your expectations. Youu should have waited for rev two of this machine. Now you are going to come back with the early adopter excuse...that is why they have seeds to developers. Get a clue people.

I am an idiot. Apple has fooled me again. I bought serial ATA drives and RAM for my vaporware G5. I have to return it all. I can't check them to see if they work because I don't have my G5. I'm not going to risk any of it being defective, because by the time I get my G5, it'll be LONG past the return dates. I should've learned my lesson when I preordered that POS G4 500 and got a cripple G4 450... oh well. Not again.

Apple sells 200,000 towers per/Quarter, this one ends Sept. 31st. Slow economy, DTP users are afraid of Quark for X, so far not bug free.....and no one can afford to replace a company's entire computer systems with new Mac's.....not these days.....(Unless Steve runs said company, say Pixar can afford to.....5th record breaking movie in a row - batting 1000 -how is that possible?)

Now, as Apple said, 2 single CPU systems will BEGIN SHIPPING in August, with the top DP 2GHz at the end of august.......I see single CPU boxes at stores, and homes, all over!!! Just like Apple announced at WWDC.

So, factor in IBM, unlike MOT has a fully automated assembly line for PPC 970's, using cheaper 300mm wafers, .13 & .09 micron process, which saves money - no employees, all automated....also no human error!!!! They have always over delivered, or were on time....MOT never ever has been on time.....so you can get an answer from IBM - and plan on it......and all is well there......the motherboards have been done for 2 years+ with minor changes (there was no DDR400 yet, etc. )

OK, say Apple hopes it's new towers will set a tower record! Over 250,000 units, even though G5's aren't available for even 1/2 the Quarter.....oops, we already sold 130,000 G4's -so that leaves 210,000 by Sept 31st ( this is sort of optimistic for a full quarter in this economy, PC sales are down.....but up from worst /only decline ever in PC history - a 9% increase in shipments....Apple would be questioned as irresponsible by shareholders - and be liable for it!
That's why Steve, Apple, manage inventories to about 5 weeks in the channel -too low, no one can buy stuff, too high, Apple must write down losses in depreciation, discounts, price protection, and warehouse space/ part & component costs -which is how Apple was losing 1 Billion/ year for 2 years before Steve came back.

OK, so people have been trying out the new G5's at stores........and Apple DID send out a PRESS RELEASE telling us all, "Educational G5 orders will be filled first, so they can use them for the school year they bought them for -and according to the contract we signed with these institutions. EDU Institutional sales will be filled first." -that's as much information as anyone can ask for.....
OK, 100,000 pre orders, is a LOT! If Apple sticks with IBM time frames - 2GHz G5's are just becoming available - assembled, then shipped....landing in stores as demo's, developers getting them, schools are getting orders......

I ordered my Duallie (standard plus Bluetooth) July 1, and until this morning, OrderStatus said "on or before 8/29/2003." Now, like everyone else, I'm OOB Sept. 26.

Anyone know if we'll get the standard "free" $20 OS update when 10.3 ships?

If I knew it was going to be the end of September before I had one, I'd have just waited until I'd heard first reports of the machine, and until I could have Panther on it.

When I compare what I could have right now -- a dual G4 (I own a 450G4-upgraded Blue & White right now) for ~$1700 -- I marvel at what the additional $1300 gets me (the next gen of everything, more RAM, more HD, better vid card, probably 4x as fast at everything), and I realize it's worth the wait.

I wonder if they'll keep the G4 towers for sale when the G5s come out. Perhaps those could be the cheap-end units to pull people in. (Like the $599 computers Dell advertises, that are so crappy that everyone ends up buying a $799 one at least)

You should at some time in your life be in a possition where what you said does not happen. Not because it's a lie, but because of something beyond your control. If IBM can't supply enough 2GB chips for the systems then how can Apple control that? (hypothetically speaking. I don't know what the hold up is)

Maybe you tell your kids, I'll be home to play at 5:30 and then something happens at work and you can't get out till late. Maybe you miss a Dr. appointment because your car breaks down.

Give me a break. It happens. I want my G5 too. I'll keep punching away on my G4 and hope it gets here soon. I also hope it comes just late enough to include a OS X 10.3 disk in the box.

Honestly, how many of your even ordered the damn G5's??? It looks like a great system, but it wouldn't be a MacNN forum if everyone didn't jump on the bandwagon.

Face it, so of you critize Apple for other things you think Apple has done to you. Some of you are jaded 0S 9 users, who still think that system is coming back. Some of you are pissed that your legacy Performa won't run iPhoto. Some of you are pissed just because have been layed...

And most importantly, some of you are pissed because you don't have the money to afford the system. It's like critizing BMW because you can only afford a Chevy.

I wonder how many people complaining on this board have *never* lied to someone, or promised something and then something prevented it. I'll bet that number is zero. There is an unforseen delay. Get over it. It reminds me of a certain Dilbert comic where the boss says "From now on, I want advanced notice of any unforseen delays!"

There are more important things in life to be upset about, such as what personality flaw you have that makes you believe the world revolves around you.

It makes sense that Apple would wait until the 29th to post the delay. Its the Friday before the three day weekend. No one works. And even more important, anything that happens today doesn't get reported until tonight and read tomorrow. Again, being a long weekend, no one's reading the papers. They're hoping to sneak it out when no one of consequence is paying attention (and when I say "of consequence", I'm talking about the stock brokers, not the users).

The people who should be really pissed should be the shareholders. They're the ones who bought or held the stock thinking there was going to be a month's of sales on the books. Now if its just 2 weeks worth, that's a real hit to the revenue targets.

I ordered at 02:16 PM PST on the day of the announcment. It says Sept 29th for me currently. yay. I also ordered macromedia studio MX with it, which shipped 2 days later. I haven't even opened that yet,and Studio 2004MX is just announced. :(
