Direcway starts beta program for Mac users

A MacNN reader notes that has started a special beta program for a Mac version of its satellite internet service: "I went there tonight to check my account info and noticed they are taking applications to beta test a Mac version of Direcway. Previously, this required an expensive Hughes router or the use of a PC to act as a gateway in order for Macs to use the connection."

http://www.mydirecway.com. then log in. there should be a poll on the front page. above that is a link to the mac beta tester page. im at work now, but gonna do it first thing when i get home. looks like my bugging the h*** out of them constantly has finally paid off.

Ok, your directions work if you are a current directway owner. What if you are not a current owner. I keep getting shuffled over to the expencive equipment from hughes route.

Is there any way to sign up as a new user?

I can get the equipment, but in order to hook up, I need to spend $1600.00. I was hoping to defray some of the costs.

Does this system support a LAN setup? Many of the other satellite ISPs I've found specifically forbid you from using more than one computer.

I just spoke to a direcway rep on the phone. If you are not a current subscriber, he suggests you wait a month or two and the new equipment will be out. This drops the price point to well within the range of the PC install and equipment charges. Approx. $600. current users can do the beta test, or use the Hughes DW4020, or the Optistream BETI R1000, approx costs $1300 to $1700.

I have waited quite a while to get it, I can wait a month more.

tried satellite, its slow compared to cable modem, response times lag, once it begins its ok.

Funny Hoax

I have been calling DirecWay for an hour now getting put on hold and transferred to every number they have... Finally, a rep tells me they have been getting a lot of calls and they know nothing about this. Sales rep tells me he can't help me, won't sign me up because there is no Mac beta program. Haha, thanks a lot, that was fun.

yeah you have to be a current subscriber to get in on the beta...which makes sense. if you can "get the equipment" from a valid subscriber just have them fill out the beta form for you. if you are not a subscriber just buy the equipment. register with mydirecway. get beta drivers. install. enjoy. equipment $1600? the stuff is like $600 i think. if you are referring to the 4020 Router they sell that's an overpriced piece of equipment. the ONLY reason i have a PC is because of DirecWay. i have to have it to provide high speed access to my Macs. no cable or dsl where i live and moving is not an option for me. DirecWay has long been lazy in driver development. as a friend of mine pointed out this "beta" is probably as stable as their PC software. there software has never been very good.

this sounds alot like the experience i have had with DirecWay. they are like most places...they dont care about customers. i cant say yes or no about the beta cause i cant register without my sn and site id which are at home.

i do know that Linux drivers exist for their service. they can be found at sourgeforge.net. ive told them this several times to have them get them and officially release them. someone else did the damn work. still nothing.

I wish Wildblue wasn't turning out to be vaporware. They're now quoting a 2004 release. It's supposed to work over TCP/IP, meaning complete platform independence.

Just because the reps don't know about it, doesn't mean it was a hoax. The beta program does exist, as anyone with the DirecWay equipment who accesses mydirecway.com can attest. You shouldn't post stupid comments saying something isn't true when you don't even have the means to actually verify it.

Please. If they officially released them, then they'd have to (a) officially support Linux, and (b) officially support the drivers, and they probably aren't willing or capable to take on the added expense or effort. Just because someone else has written the drivers doesn't mean you can just say "Here, use these, but don't bother us with any problems". You're better off just saying "We don't support it" and "That's an unsupported system, we don't support it" and let the Linux geeks find this stuff out for themselves.

i know that they would have to do those things if they supported linux. as i said in an early post...they cant even get windows working right. almost everyone i have ever talked to at DW technical was an complete moron. they can't learn windows, lesser yet understand linux. the only reason i suggested the sourceforge drivers was because i wanted DW to support ANYTHING except windows. i request mac drivers every time i call there. i want a windows-free household and looks like i may finally get my wish. goodbye WINDOWS! FOREVER. MUHAHAHAHA!

ok. i got home. signed up for the beta test. can't download anything. it just says in so many words "thanks for your interest. if you are selected...yadda yadda. thank you."
can't download the drivers. DW...you continue to just suck. i really wish DSL and Cable were here so I could drop your sorry butts. but, on the other hand at least you are FINALLY taking the time to write mac drivers. let's just hope they dont write drivers for 10.2 and have them stop working in a few weeks when Panther is out :-P
