Differences in Symantec NAV updates?

updated 01:25 am EDT, Tue August 26, 2003

", 0, 0);

A MacNN reader notes some important differences in the automatic and downloadable versions of (August 19, 2003 with 28,756 viruses identified). In addition, SoBig.F is only mentioned in the download version."

"Either the difference lies in virus classification changes with no effect on security or someone at Symantec is failing to push the updates through LiveUpdate and that would be inherently bad. Symantec should explain what the heck is going on and if necessary, correct the problem.

"This is not an isolated occurrence, as differences also existed last month with the LiveUpdate (July 1, 2003 with 28,219 viruses identified) and the and the Symantec's http download (July 10, 2003 with 28,282 viruses identified)."

    What def version

    Hello! This must be some thought that has left the building. Can you at least provide the def version that is stapled to every signature update instead of just lable how many viruses identified? There is NO way to get to a single answer if you don't provide the right question.

    Re: A link

    If that user had spent a minute looking around, he would have found the difference between the two. And for those who are too lazy to copy and paste the link, here is the difference:

    "During "non-alert" situations, Symantec Security Response posts virus definitions to the LiveUpdate servers once per week (usually Wednesdays). During "alert" situations, however, virus definitions are posted to the LiveUpdate servers as soon as they have completed full quality-assurance testing. In all situations, virus definitions are made available for (optional) manual download on a daily (Monday to Friday) basis using the Intelligent Updater."

    Corrections to the above

    1) The snarling users above are confusing Windows with the Mac. Live Update for NAV9 has not been updated every week via LiveUpdate. It has been about every month, about 3 days after the earlier versions have been updated. You can cut and paste all you want but that isn't what has happened in the past.
    2) If SoBig.F doesn't warrant an immediate Live Update for the mac, what does? It has been 7 days since the downloadable version has been made available and it has yet to make it into the Live Update. Yes SoBig.F doesn't infect the Mac, but it should be present to prevent forwarding by Mac users.
    3) One of the main selling points of NAV9 was that it would be easier to update using the windows files. Why not give us that feature on a more timely basis.

    Maybe I'm stupid and don't understand all these Windows viruses and all, but how stupid does a user have to be to forward a virus email from their mac to other users?

    If you're virus defs are out of date, then you don't know that it's a virus, stupid.
