ZDnet picks Apple's eMac for price-conscious
updated 01:40 am EDT, Fri August 22, 2003
Described as an "affordable all-in-one Mac system with adequete speed and a 17-inch display," Apple's eMac was ZDNet's for the "Starving Student" category: "Don't mess around with setup, crazy configuration, or big price tags; this sparely designed Mac has everything a student needs, including a SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) option. Plus, its compact size is perfect for those tiny dorm desks."

what I was about to suggest but as you say, it might be a little too slow. Apple needs to speed up its iBook line-up. If it hadn't been so slow, I would have bought one already. I've ordered a dual PowerMac instead... No comparaison, I know LOL

Adequete?

It's heartwarming to see the widespread use of spellcheckers for mainstream published text.
Now if only Apple could somehow integrate a spellchecker into OSX, that would truly be a feat of modern technology.

ZDNet's link says the eMac is not available online from any of their merchants.

Actually, there IS an integrated spellchecker in OSX. At least one utility, HyperSpell, takes advantage of it:

There may be others...

The integrated spellchecker in Mac OS X is available to ANY Cocoa application without add-ons like HyperSpell. Even in Safari -- but you have to spell check each edit field separately.
Just hit Command-Semicolon when you're done typing. The only thing it flagged in this message was HyperSpell :-)

Nice to have a Mac win one of the categories, but th way it is presented, it actually makes it look like the only reason to buy an eMac is if you can not afford the Dell or HP systems mentioned.
Also as usual, Dell is distorting perceptions of their system's pricing. When you click the link to look into the Dimension 8300, Dell tells you that the pricing starts out at $999 and shows you a photo of PC, monitor, and printer all together. The challenge of the day : go to Dell's website and try to configure a Dimension 8300 for $999.

I guess the sarcasm didn't really come across very well.
Take a look at the title of that post. "Adequete?" And then take a look at the comments regarding spellchecking. Wait a few moments for it to sink in.

Yeah. I'm glad someone else out there caught the slight hint of sarcasm... geez.. and I knew there would be at least 2 or 3 posts saying: "Hey! There IS a spellchecker in OS X !!! "
Unbelievable...
