    Just wait

I am hearing very distant rumors that over time, the cost of building the g5 and the mac components itself will eventually come down a bit. Plus with the supposed 3ghz and up speeds due in a year or less and maybe even with 4+ chip configs. I am hoping for a 499 mini tower with just the basics. The perfect competition for the cheapier PCs but maybe the mac will be 200 more or so depending. This machine would have limited PCI expansion if any or just 1 regular slot and firewire and USB. Their regular towers would have significantly more goodies to definitely lure that type of buyer, but just imagine.... for $499 you can get a tower with a video card and fast g4 or dare we say down the road... a g5 single processor. Imagine the OSX and linux users who would go hog wild,... Universites and business would have a much harder time ignoring the cost difference between Macs and PCs.

Apple,.. if you can, this is a super smart move... hey,... even a fast g4 for a econo box would be a smart idea... and let users expand its options thru you and or mailorder etc.

    Nuff said.

    Re: Just Kidding

The day of var configs is long gone. A $499 tower will never happen.

    Whoo-hoo!

My dual cheesegrater is shipping Aug. 29 or before, according to Apple's order tracker.

I can't wait to grate me some cheese!

    good point, macmoose

This is an ideal time for Apple to make a truly cheap, but reasonably capable G4-based box. Get it into chain stores everywhere and target kids. h***, sell the box at close to cost just to get more market share. Virtually nobody switches to Mac and then goes back.

The G5 is so damn drool-worthy.

    Cheap boxes won't happen

Why is it that when new technology comes out, people think old technology instantly becomes cheaper to build? Why would G4 cases, RAM, boards, etc. be cheaper to manufacturer all of a sudden? You still have to run factories, pay workers, etc.

When you see cheap, older model computers on sale, it's because they just want to dump existing stock. It doesn't mean they can continue to produce them at that price. A $499 new G4 or G5 box just won't happen. If that's what you want, go to eBay.
