NYT: G5 to be in stores "today"

updated 04:25 am EDT, Mon August 18, 2003

The New York Times reports that Apple has over 100,000 pre-orders of the Power Mac G5 and that the new 64-bit computer will be available on Tuesday, which Adobe says "will improve Photoshop's performance on Apple's G5 computers by 75 to 200 percent, depending on the operation."

    It's only...

good for Apple to hear that "PC Perfered" Adobe will get photoshop's upgrade plugin out the door fast. Hopefully, PS 8 will have it and Altivec performance boosts embeded in the program.

    Does that mean...

I can get one at an Apple store?

    Nope.

Only for display. You have to wait a few weeks more...

I hope that this plug-in boosts performance a LOT.. :(

    Bus speed bottleneck was

The G4 really is an efficient, vector crunching Monster...but a single 500MHz MPC7400/7410/7450/7455 completely saturated a 133MHz bus. Which limited how much data the CPU could chew on, and shoot back through the system for actual use. The CPU is great, but system BUS speed ( CPU-to-RAM was like using a straw to suck truck loads of data to the CPU.......we had 1.3 Gb/sec for BOTH CPU's sharing what a single CPU could saturate........leaving this efficient CPU spinning it's wheels data starved.......
Now, using HT, we have a 1 GHz system bus for EACH CPU, 8 GB/sec bandwidth, scaling at 1/2 the CPU clock speed......when we have 3GHz G5's....they will have dual 1.5GHz system busses..........Intel only has 800MHz bus speeds ( 200MHz quad pumped ) which is only 1/4 the 3.2GHz P4 clock speed. Bandwidth to burn.

Add to this the Power 4 is the fastest server/workstation CPU on earth. MIPS, Alpha, Sparc, Itanic, Xeon, P4, AMD, -without a 128 bit vecor processing unit......2 Complex 64 bit FPU's, 2 Complex Integer Units, 2 load store units, and AltiVec...

It should easily best a P4, by a factor of 4. No one has really seen what Altivec can do with unlimited bandwidth.....yet. It is SCARY! Especially holding 216 instructions in-flight, using DDR400 for 6.4 GB/sec RAM, Serial ATA, 8x AGP....the system has no limits.......as for optimized code.....when not optimized ( or G4 optimized) a G5 is 3x faster.....than a G4. Scheduling, which is quite different in a 970, gives it closer to 6 to 8 times faster than a G4 CPU......
PhotoShop hauls a**! So does any Audio/Video/3-D/ multimedia/ MPEG encode/decode - it's the mother of all CPU's, and nothing will catch up in the next decade.......scary fast!!!!

    Prepare your credit cards...

    I wonder...........

When we'll see them in the UK then. Have had my DP G5 on order since day 1. Can't wait to see how it compares to my old G4 667. Let's hope Apple get them out the door fast; It'll be good for the company.

    Snappy Like OS9

This system feels faster, or shall I dare say "snappier", than OS9.

Anyone else have theirs yet too?
