iChat AV, iSight chat system: "impressive"
updated 10:55 am EDT, Thu August 14, 2003
Walter Mossberg's concludes: "iSight's biggest drawback is you won't be able to do video chatting with most of the world, which uses Windows and slow, dial-up connections...Still, Apple often sets the trend for other companies. And sometimes, as in the case of the iPod music player, the company even deigns to extend its products to Windows users over time. So Apple's success in video instant messaging holds hope for all of us."

Let's make...

...a car when there are no roads...
...a phone that nobody else can call...
...a browser that can't render websites...
...a webcam that perhaps 2% of the computer world can use!
If only they could understand this is a problem!

Windows compatibility

Actually, you can interact with Windows users who have NetMeeting available on their computers. I've been using ohphoneX which is H.323 video conferencing compatible. This allows one to interact with other H.323 compliant users, for example Windows Netmeeting, through a Mac. It detects the iSight beautifully as a Quicktime cam source. Although the quality isn't the greatest, it provides an option for those willing to communicate with their Windows counterparts.

So, what, Apple should be making a Windows version of iChat? Why? Shouldn't the hardware be independent of the chatting software (hey, it is). Its just that the other software sucks. That ain't Apple's fault. You could be happy its a standards-compliant camera, but no, you want to have them to write yet another video confernence prorgam for windows, which your friends I'm sure would be just thrilled to install just to see your face. The problem here is the same problem with IM programs. Each one (MS's, Yahoo's, AOL's, etc) all talk basically their protocol, and no one elses (except maybe ICQ). How about one default protocol and server set up so I can chat using iChat with someone who has MS Chat and someone else running Yahoo? Same with video.

Yeah, some people just don't get it.
Hello!? Have you used those other video chat apps. They're c***! Apple created a video chat (using standards) that works a thousand times better than those others. That's the entire point of creating their own. Steve Jobs even said, as soon as others adopt the standards, they will be able to interact with iChat AV.

Don't get it?

You don't f****** get it. The other people don't dispute the fact that it works great but at a cost $ and also the number of people you can talk to.
First, Apple has 3% of the market. Of those people, let's say half has enough juice in their system to run it. And another percentage of them can afford to buy iSight. Once the beta is over, it's another $100 to upgrade to Panther (don't get me started on how Jobs is ripping me off once a year to upgrade OS X from 10.1 to .2 and .3) so that he can make his millions.
So what does that leave you? Basically, you have an excellent AV chat program an an excellent camera and no one to talk to. This was the point of the article and I agree with him.

iSight for Windows?
08/14, 03:51pm reply
Why not?
iPOD for windows works thanks to 3rd party solution via MusicMatch.
What's stopping someone from using the similar software that comes with the iBOT with the iSight on Windows?
The iSight is a firewire camera at best... but with some special additions that other web cams don't offer. I can use the iSight with other software other than iChatAV for video conferencing.
Someone should post if they have successfully tried iSight with a Windows machine ;-)

Hey, I get it. Apple's released a web cam that should work on windows and macs now (not in the future, now). Its just a webcam. There's no saying it won't work. They just don't have the video conferencing software for it. Who cares, use one of the 1800 already out there. This ain't rocket science dude.
And iChat works with other webcams as well, not just iSight. So the complaint about all this being just for the 6 people who can afford it is stupid at best.
