Fortune's David Kirkpatrick says that HP's massive 158 ..'Is HP the new Apple?' Omar Wasow leaned over and asked me during the company�s massive product launch in New York Monday.... moving to become the Apple of the PC world.' Apple of course has led the way toward a vision of integrated digital consumer devices and software for imaging, music, and video. But HP didn�t merely want to 'think different,' but to 'rethink everything.'"

Who knows, HP might pull it off (their scanner is pretty cool, although I can't really say it looks like something I'd want to use). Then again, based on as much as I've seen come out of HP over the years (increasingly crappy Vectra corporate PCs, lame, ink-hungry printers, and so-so scanners), I have my doubts they're going to manage anything past a warmed-over rehash of what's already been done by Apple, Sony, and what Gateway is trying to pull.

I didn't buy their products before, and I'm not going to buy them now.

Nice printer

Hey, I have an HP laser printer and all -- never given me a bit of problem -- but the drool factor on 158 new Windows PCs, various printers and scanners, and the odd digital camera: it's just not there. The little upright scanner seems sort of interesting. Now if I only had a use for a scanner...

nothing in this press annoucement is anything earth shattering or industry changing. who really cares if they updated some printers, scanners, and wintel boxes? there's no iPod-like product shown off here. and as for that vertical scanner... um what if i wanna scan a page from a big encyclopedia or textbook? it just seems like it'll tip over.

comparing this annoucement to becoming the next apple just goes to show that despite a small market share, everyone is still playing catch-up with everything that apple does.

Is it me, or is it chic now to compare every device maker to Apple? WTFC! I work around HP s*** all day, and believe me, they are NOT the next Apple, to say the least.
Sheesh. HP has to be one of the WORST hardware makers out, straight up.

Some revolution, over a hundred "new" products and not ONE that's remotely creative or interesting. I mean, home DVD burning machines capable of making a DVD movie out of a videotape or a TV show have been around for years by now, and that's the most creative of the bunch!
The rest is a bunch of tired old inkjet printers, scanners, what have you. Yawn, yawn, yawn. NeXT!

These new HP products are TURDY. The last 158 HP peripherals were TURDY too. So much c*** is coming out of HP lately, one should be asking "Is HP the new b*******?"

Haven't we all seen this before? It's positively Amelioesque. There's a reason Apple stripped down it's product line. Clearly communicate the nature of your product division, with clear, well-conceived price and performance points. There's a reason we don't see Performa's on the shelves anymore.

If anyone sees a product as capable as defining or redefining a genre as an iMac or iPod from H-P, I'd like to hear of it.

Of course, after the recent board shenanigans and near-coup with H-P's upper ranks, you've got to do some positive marketing, or else.

so narrow minded....if it does not have a little Apple logo on it it must be c***. Geez if you took a little time to read about some of the new products they are actually pretty cool. The new scanner everyone is ragging on is actually very cool. It has a clear top and you can set it on top of anything you want to scan and scan it. No scan bed no lid. Just pick some thing and scan. The new phot spinters with the true black and white photo quality prints is also very impressive. No HP is not the "new Apple" they are just too big. But if you compare them to say Dell. There is a lot more innovation than just regurgitation. Don't get me worng I love my Mac and wish other companies would take some design risks and revolutionize p[roducts like Apple but to just put out a blanket statement that its all c*** is really ignorant.

First of all, the previous poster was ragging on headlines like "Is Saddam ..."

Second of all, "You Americans ..." is an unfair and ignorant generalization.

Third, how is it "our" SUVs?

Fourth, I'm not saying I'm for the war in Iraq, but referring to Iraq as "non-threatening" just removed all credibility you might have had in posting criticism, and saying that the war is Iraq is solely about oil is naive and very geopolitically uninformed.

Fifth, leave your unnecessary political jibes out of a discussion about HP's new product line.

ok, the scanner? Nice
The 8-ink printer? Nice
The camera? Could be nice.
The 17-inch screen computer for $1500? Nice, although at 10 pounds couldn't really be called a notebook. Battery life must be good, though!
Looks like Apple will stay in business (whew!)

My view from experience..

My family (I'm strictly a mac guy) has gone through 3 HP PCs, and 3 of my clients have also gone through 1 or 2 themselves. My and their experience with each one has been the same. Upon arrival, they contain the standard preloaded version of Windows along with the preloaded versions of all the HP software to make everything work one-touch (scanners, cameras, etc). After the first or second runs of windows update, the "one-touch" feature starts to malfunction. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

God forbid we reinstall windows if the computer gets hit with a worm/virus... then all the HP software has to be reinstalled (which of course it can't be without running the restore disks). My point is that all this one-touch c*** and integration requires a very specific setup, and once you start changing this, look out.

And, like everyone else said, more products (however neat) != Apple.
