Adobe Photoshop 8.0 due by end of year

Adobe is likely to release and other key applications by the end of this year, according to an analyst report released Monday: "Gene Munster of investment bank USB Piper Jaffrey upgraded his rating on Adobe from 'outperform' to 'strong buy,' based partly on expectations that the software maker will deliver a new version of its premiere product--the Photoshop image editing and graphics program--within the next four months...'We believe the product will ship late in Adobe's (fourth quarter).'"

Meanwhile, Adobe plans to release InDesign 3.0 later this fall with "changes when working with text, tables, color, InDesign's work area, import/export, and other areas. Adobe also reportedly plans to ship a PageMaker Edition of InDesign aimed at reining in users of its legacy design software, as well as InCopy 3, a new version of its editorial workflow product."

Printers

This is good for those who can use InDesign and know of printers that support it. Personally I love InDesign over Quark but the way they change their product every year it is no wonder why printers are reluctant to support it. Adobe needs to somehow convince printers to support InDesign, designers already know it is a great product, they now need to change the minds of printers.

Though I'm in NYC now, I've been using InDesign for a few years, here and there, and I've had no problems finding printers who support it (and often enthusiastically). When I lived in Florida (in hayseed areas) even, it was never a problem.

Adobe changing InDesign has little to do with printers supporting it. I'd like to know what Adobe has changed that you've run into that a printer wouldn't support. Everything essentially can be (and often is these days) output to PDF for a vendor anyhow, so I'm not sure what "changes" you are talking about. Plates are plates.

What about FrameMaker

They should be updating FrameMaker, especially since it runs on other *nix systems, how about making it run on OS X, running it in classic is pretty much a Pain in the A$$.

PS 8 ... eh!

Photoshop 7 was the first worthy upgrade since 4 (okay, 5.5 if you use ImageReady a lot). I can't imagine what would compel me to upgrade to 8 so soon after getting 7 ... keeping multiple Adobe products upgraded is EXPENSIVE.

I look very much forward to seeing what InDesign 3 has to offer, but I *do* actually think I'll be keeping Quark 6 around for a whle ... it's actually quite good (not perfect), well-supported (kind of the MS Word of DTP, while InDesign is still the WordPerfect of DTP) and widely accepted. I enjoy using both -- InDesign for new projects, Q6 for "legacy" projects.

While I've never used nor plan to ever use Framemaker, I agree with calls for it to be ported to OS X ... if it's already on *nix, c'mon already ...

I'm in charge of the DTP dep't at a major printers. InDesign is still far from being widely used even though we get to receive more and more idn files. We usually don't have too many problems as long as designers stick to standard DTP artwork such as EPS or TIFF. Sure placing a PSD image right into a layout is much easier than finalzing it in Photoshop, specially when you want to take advantage of transparencies or various channels. Unfortunately, PSD is not supported by our OPI server. Worse, in many cases, InDesign was unable to generate an EPS nor a PDF even with a .PS processed by Distiller. Adobe still has to make these new features fully functional before printers fully embrace InDesign.

Interesting. I've never, ever had a problem generating a PDF. Or an EPS. And I've been using it since 1.0, for any and all projects where I've had the luxury of choosing.

What you're talking about sounds like an isolated problem. As for the placement of Photoshop files--of course that isn't ideal. Printers often exhibit that stereotypical IT-guy mentatilty: rather than communicating with customers, folks instead sigh and complain that customers are idiots.

In short, the "problems" with InDesign are largely associated with users not knowing any better. And who more qualified to tell them than their vendor?

Maybe you could post a file from which you are unable to generate a PDF? I'm rather curious....

In fiscal 2001 compared to fiscal 2000, revenue from our application products on the Windows platform increased 9%, and revenue from our application products on the Macintosh platform decreased 21% during the same period. In fiscal 2002, the Windows and Macintosh platforms accounted for 71% and 29%, respectively, of application products revenue, excluding platform-independent and UNIX products, compared to 70% and 30%, respectively, in fiscal 2001, and 63% and 37%, respectively, in fiscal 2000. How can they make PS better then it already is? It seems like it's one of the longest-running apps. I mean, when everyone else jumped to 10 or X versions, adobe just kept to the scheme. I like that about them. PS just keeps getting better and better, while products like Office get more and more bloated.
