eWeek reports that Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther" is still : "While Apple will say only that Mac OS X 10.3 (aka Panther) will ship by year-end, sources said the company is still on track to let the cat of the bag this September...eWEEK first reported the upgrade's delivery date this spring, but when Apple announced Panther at its June Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, the Mac maker would say only that the release would be 'available by the end of this year.'"

    Um...

After hearing reports of how the recent builds aren't exactly beta yet, I find this hard to believe. If it does ship next month, I def. won't be buying it unless the builds that are surfacing are like 3 months old and Apple has been keeping a real build under tight security.

    October 3rd

Wouldn't it make more sense to ship it on October 3rd so they could play off the the whole 10.3 thing like they did last year with opening the Apple Stores at 10:20?

    timetable

I can panther coming out possibly in late september, although I'm thinking it will be more October.

Two reasons, first the back to school crowd... it would be pretty bad (from a P.R. standpoint at least) to release an OS right on the heals of back to school season. I can see alot of customers saying, "I thought I was buying the latest and greatest, and two weeks later theres a new O.S.?" They could remedy this buy grandfathering in those systems if purchased by a specific date. However, this would be lost revenue so I wouldn't anticipate it.

Second, I October ensures that going into the holiday season all computers will be shipping with 10.3. There's going to be a lag in inventory between systems with 10.2 and systems with 10.3. While 10.2 systems will probably be offered a "free upgrade" (they did this with Jaguar last year if the system did not have 10.2), the October timeframe will clean out inventory before the holiday sales season is in full swing.

October is really the only timeframe (from a sales perspective) that I could forsee.

    I doubt it

Having seen current builds I would seriously doubt it's availability in around a month. However, seeing that Apple is making quick work of releasing seeds to developers perhaps there is a slight chance.

I would be very disappointed however is Apple release 10.3 with only the thus far announced and noted features. We wouldn't be getting a great deal of extra functionality; I hope there is something that they have up their sleeve.

I think Panter's features are great for the average user. If you need something you need to install it. Have you seen Panter running on anything? It feels much faster on old computers, which is something that everyone will like, not to mention the G5 support.
