Mac OS 9.1 order options from Apple

Mac OS 9.1, now available as a multi-part download, can be ordered on CD from Apple for $20. Mac OS Up-To-Date offers 9.1 for $20 to qualifying new purchasers of Macs from an authorized Apple reseller or Apple Computer, Inc. on or after January 9, 2001. The full version is available at the Apple Store as well. [updated; several international language versions also available]

As long as we're on the subject, iTunes is also available through the FTP server. The directory is:

I tried for like 3hrs to get the 9.1 updater via apple.com using my web browser. I finally remembered ftp.apple.com and tried it too using my web browser - still not able to get it. But I then tried my ftp app on a whim and am d/l'ing it now - just VERY slowly. Stange. I wonder by it is only in multi-part format?

Huh? Third Party Power PC Cards, does this mean it won't run on my 8500 with a Sonnet G3/500 in it? That can't be right...

machines are not supported. (I don't know whether they actually

Dumb CD Upgrade Policy

While I was cheering the Webcast today of the keynote speech, Apple does some things that are amazingly dumb. You cannot order the 9.1 update any other way except by sending in a piece of paper to Apple. No internet ordering, no phone orders. Since they are probbaly making a profit of about $15 per CD, don't you think they would want as many people as possible to order the upgrade? Mind you, this is only an upgrade which will only work if you already have 9.0 in some flavor. I wanted it as a bootable CD (which apparently it is), but what an archaic, unnecessary way to sell it. Dumb!

Language Kits

The Read Me says Language Kits from 9.0.4 are incompatible with 9.1, and Language Kits can only be updated by starting up from the Mac OS 9.1 CD. Has anyone figured out a way to install the 9.1 Language Kits using the downloadable updater and the 9.0.4 CD?

maybe a reason...

they may have shut down the ftp access once they realized people were bypassing the agreement that way. I was getting everything from the ftp but then it got shut down on me. now I can't get anything. My guess is the servers are overloaded...

Duhhh!!!!

Until this MW conference, I've been very critical of Apple. But now they've pulled their head outta their a** and turned things around. Their new powermacs and powerbooks show that they've been listening to customers, and that they still have the ability to innovate. OS X is looking good, the best part is that they obviously listened to the feedback and made some changes (The apple menu is back, yay!) I'm impressed.

So what's up with all you whiners? WHAHWAHWHAWHWA!! If you don't like it then go use Windows and we'll see how much you b**** about it.

Who the h*** cares if OS 9.1 comes on a CD or not? Just download that b**** and back it up on a CDR or zip disk or something. What's the problem? S***, anything Apple does you find something to complain about.

A word to the wise: when a new update is released, its best to wait a few days for the damand to subside before trying to download it....unless you enjoy wasting your time trying access overloaded servers. Damn, you are all a bunch of spoilt crybabies. I'd hate to have been your mothers...

I updated successfully to 9.1 and just for kicks tried the software update control panel and it tells me to update carbonlib version 1.2. The 9.1 update installs 1.1.1
Does this seem interesting/strange to anyone else.
Should we update to 1.2?

Finally Finished, but...

Well, I have just finished downloading the updater from a secret little spot
ftp://6pack01.info.apple.com

anywhoo, so I finished and tryed installing and what do I get?
During install I get the error, "There has been an error installing "Big Morsals Something". The instalatin cannot continue.

Whats up with that? Anybody else get this error or is my dl just screwed up.

On a side note, for those that are getting rejected from apple's ftp servers, a couple of things are going on. You have to enter an e-mail for the password on some of the ftp sites. I tried a couple of times and the only time it let me in was when I put in an e-mail.

big morsels thing

I recieved the same error while updating to 9.04-- NOT 9.1 (which I do not have yet) i installed from a cd (obviously) and booted off the cd. Every time I installed 9.04, about half-way through I got that idiotic error. Really pissed me off. So i trtied inserting the cd and installing without booting from the cd, and it worked!... not sure how much help that was (im guessing zilch) but you might try booting off a 9.0 or 8.6 or 8.1 cd and installling or just installing it from a non-startup partition...

Software Update

I seriously doubt this update will be made available via Software Update -- it's just too damn big. I have DSL and I'm tempted to just shell out $20 for the CD upgrade for convenience's sake.

Of course, after the initial furor dies down, I'll probably grab it at work...nothing like a fat research institute pipe, heh.

I downloaded all 15 parts while I took a shower using Hotline. Watch out though. Some people claiming to have 9.1 really have the early GM release. Be sure it's the 15 parter.

MacOS 9 won't update if.

...you have a language kit installed.

I'm highly peeved right now, because I JUST reinstalled my system, and applied all the updates in preparation for installing the 9.1 upgrade. After I FINALLY managed to download all of it I ran the installer, only to have it tell me that it couldn't update my system because the language kit was installed! It said that I would have to install MacOS 9.1 from the CD!

Now I have to install the OS *AGAIN* and THEN upgrade. I hope 9.1 will install the Language Kits...

OS 91 and Adaptec 2930CU

I just installed the OS 9.1 update (which went fine) but then after restart, it booted into Open Firmware and froze up. My system is a G4 dual 450 BTO with the adaptec UW SCSI Card. Unfortunately I had to remove it and my G4 was happy once again. seems this SCSI card is not flash upgradeable so I am once again without a burner until a firewire one comes my way. Just wanted to pass on this word of caution if you have 3rd party PCI cards installed, you might want to wait till updated drivers are available before installing this update.
On a lighter note, OS 9.1 has been great so far.

English International 9.1

The English International update appears not to even be there. The first segment downloads fine (albeit after a long inital wait) however all the other segments report a 404 file not found error. The English International version isn't on the 6-pack ftp site either. Any one else had this problem?

To avoid the 404 error:

Go to the MacUpdate web site
Look for the url of the files, and change ".../us/..." to your country code.
Works for the french version...

According to the readme that came with the 9.1 update, it is NOT COMPATIBLE with the OS X beta. :) Just wanted to make sure that people knew that. Thank goodness I actually read the ReadMe before installing. ;)

If you get an error at installation, you have to make a clean installation. It'll creat a new system folder and save the old one.

Downloads

Anyone using ftp.apple.com should STOP and go to the info.apple.com link from http://www.apple.com/macos/ (along the right side).

I would imagine that the official Apple link uses Akamai to distribute the files. Since Akamai has 8,000 machines around the world, you'll get it faster than just downloading from the Apple address.

If you attempt to install 9.1 with OS X PB already installed, there is an error dialog that comes up to tell you that the two are incompatable. It is sad news to me as a developer who enjoys protected memory that I cant take advatage of 9.1 until OS X comes out. I guess the good news is that a lot more people will uninstall OS X PB because of this. That is good. Fewer problems with people trying to run OS X apps on the public beta. (The public beta is missing far to much important stuff to consider supporting.)

This 15 part download is proof that Apple really doesn't want people to download it, they want people to buy the upgrade for $20 instead. Shame on you Apple! You just want more cash in the bank before OS X is released because your projected sales figures for it are sagging. This download is all but impossible to complete on Apple's bandwidth, given that anyone with any sort of connection to the internet is trying to download it. If they want to boost loyalty, they ought to distribute it on a CD and circulate it in popular Mac magazines. Anyone remember trying to download the System 7.5 updates with a 14.4 modem? Come on Apple! Be a little more considerate to your loyal customer base!

If you have installed OS X PB and have been using the Classic Environment, you need to make a copy of your 9.0.4 System Folder BEFORE installing the 9.1 updater.

After installing 9.1, launch OS X PB and redesignate the system folder to be used in the Classic Enviornnment to be the copied 9.0.4 System Folder. It will work as before.

What does it do?

Does anyone know what's new in MacOS 9.1? I've heard rumors about a better process manager but nothing significant. I can't seem to find any info on Apple's site either. Does it work better? Is it more stable? Any comments other than, "I can't download it?"

9.1 killed my...

firewire drive. I boot from that since I have OS X on the main drive. now when I hold down the option key and pick the drive it starts okay but it can't find the system disk.

So I reinstalled 9.0...still can't find the system disk...installed 9.1 over that...can't find the system disk.

Anyone know of something I could try to fix it? I really don't want to erase about 40 gigs of stuff.

Oh please. The damn thing's been out for a day!!!! Certainly Apple will make it available to magazine CD publishers. The update is free, for goodness sakes! You want it right now, your way, damn the cost? Just take a breather and realize that you don't need to have the update the very day after it comes out. If you do, order the damn thing and pay for convenience (isn't that what we pay for when we opt to not buy Microsoft).

9.1 Installed

I just installed 9.1, took forever to get all the pieces. Hardly any changes I can see. I installed iTunes yesterday, and it is pretty much the same on 9.04 as it is on 9.1. Checking the extensions on extension manager, it quit a few times. I've yet to try some speed tests with my external firewire HD and Quake 3. Doesn't seem much faster either.

8 weeks to get CD

Someone wrote you order the CD for convenience??? Well...I'm pissed that according to the Apple PDF to order the $20 Cd upgrade which I was ready to do you have to wait 6 to 8 weeks to get the damn thing. Do I want to wait 2 full months to get the 9.1 CD? NO. That would put my upgrade CD at my door a mere 13 days before Mac OS X is released.

At least if they are going to charge for the upgrade CD (which according to them is not just upgrade but the FULL INSTALL CD) they could at least find a way to turn the thing around within a week or two at most.

Now if I want to get it I have to buy it for $99 from their store or at retail or wait 2 months for the CD.

Conflict- Office Manager

I don't know if others have found this or not, but after installing OS 9.1 I was getting freezes at the end of the startup process... after a LOT of extension checking, I discovered that the latest version of Microsoft Office Manager (for Office 2001) was causing the conflict.

Heavy system 9.1 errors

i have installed 9.1 on several macs. no problems at all. although it makes a terrible mess of your harddisc. it throws all the older stuff in a folder named 'applications mac os 9' or something like that.
but when it comes down to the 'oldies' i found some terrible errors. on a 9600/233 the processor upgrade (powerlogix G3/400) software won't work. crash. the sagem isdn ppp: bomb crash at startup. the control strip after installing quicktime 4.1.2 bomb crash at start-up. apple audio extention bomb crash at startup. outlook express memory -108 error. pro tools free sound manager / dae error. crash.

i performed a clean install after formatting low level. no special software. no cracks.
