I get just a black screen

With the word DEMO on it.

Hit ESC (probably any key would do), wait for the resulting chime to decay and Command-Q to get my screen back (Quit to Finder).

    Shame...sounds like a neat game.

TiBook 1G/1G/60G 23" Studio display (though same failure mode with extra screen disconnected :-( ),

    Works fine for me

Hmm, I don't know what's up with your system, but it works fine on my Dual 867 G4 with Cinema Display. First the blank screen with DEMO appears, then a loading screen, then the title screen comes up as it should. I suggest you tweak your system and keep trying. It's a cool game.

    I want to like this...

...but I'm having a hard time getting past the 10 year time limit. I like the lighthearted tone of the game but I really want something bigger. Something that I can explore for a good while. It sounds like the real game has the 10 year limit, too. This might work for some players, but I'm not sure I like it.
