CompUSA: 2GHz G5 Power Mac due in mid-Sept

MacNN reader Matthew Burgener writes "I called Compusa today because indicates that the new crop of G5 machines will begin shipping on August 5. I spoke with Kyle in Austin and he indicated that the dual-2GHz G5 won't ship for at least seven weeks and the other single processor G5s won't ship for 4-6 weeks." Meanwhile, another reader notes that some locations are offering a 5% discount on purchases of $1500 or more to students with a Student ID (or an Acceptance Letter from a college).

Indeed. Plus, this is something Apple had us used to. I just hope the PowerMac G4 I ordered 3 weeks ago won't take that long to be delivered though. I can't wait to move to OS X.

Apple is notorious for annoucing the product 6 months before its ready to go but say "shipping in 3 months!"

Nevermind it loudly proclaiming to be much much faster when compared to a processor that shipped 6 months ago.

Don't get me wrong, I hope and believe G5 will be a speedy muthafuckah and kick any x86 CPUs a** but to proclaim it (and whipping up zealots world-wide) so when it is not going to be avail in 3-4 months is just irresponsible Steve!

don't people realize what "backordered" means?

a whole lot of G5s have already been ordered. anyone else who wants to buy a G5 needs to get in line behind the people who have already ordered.

If you call CompUSA then they are going to tell you how soon they will have G5s available for sale to YOU; that is NOT the same thing as saying when the first G5s will be delivered to the people who ordered them a month ago

I have a friend who goes out with Steve Job's daughter's cousin, and she says that the G5 won't be out till Panther.. and that the ship date is 12/7 or 7/12 for you Europeans out there.. she also said that Steve's jets was and I quote " like totally cool, and it has ipods built into the seats.

What is it with people. They do nothing but whine when Apple doesn't announce a new system, and then do nothing but whine when they announce it a couple of months before release. Would you have been happier if they didn't announce it in May/June (whenever the h*** they did) and waited until end of August? What would you have had to talk about then all summer?

Have you been into a CompUSA lately? Although in the beginning they were great, their Apple support and pricing (who else charged 50% above MSRP for OS X?) have become so poor that I would hope they'd be last on the list to receive G5s.

CompUSA Opinions...

To the poster who bashed on CompUSA employees ; I have a few words for you.

Firstly,I was a Mac Salesperson @ CompUSA for 4 years (put myself through college) and I can honestly say underpaid, we were not. In fact, those employees who demonstrated knowledge in Macintosh were rewarded. After all, Apple Products have the Highest Profit Margin of Computer they sell, making their sales quite valuable.

That aside, ALL CompUSA's now have an Apple employee in the store 5 days a week. Thats right, and APPLE paid,trained,hired employee. They go to the infinite loop every 3 months or so for training on all Apple products.

Granted, they know nothing about shipping times, and likely get their info from the web sites we do, but the people there are more knowledgeable than you give them credit for.

My source (a lot closer to Apple than MacMall) also tells me October.

I don't know why so many people have to be nasty. Just trying to help. Would you rather be waiting each and every day for a computer to arrive for an additional 6 weeks, or just accept that there are delay?

Take a chill pill, folks. And don't expect the dual 2.0 GHZ until October, because it's not arriving any sooner.

I didn't mean to bash the employees. Pricing above retail and carrying severely out of date software (at times two version behind the current release) are management problems. Employee training also falls under this heading. These are corporate issues.

As far as support, I'm guessing that support varies trememdously from store to store. It sounds like your store was a good one, and I wish I'd had teh please of being a customer there. Unfortunately, that's not been my general CompUSA experience. The non-Apple reps often directed people away from Mac purchases. It truly made me wonder way Apple supported such an organization.

Depends when you ordered

If you order a dual 2GHz today it will ship in October because a lot of people are ordering those. Its currently listed as #7 top seller on Apple's website.

If you order either of the other two G5s today they will ship in September. I haven't ordered one so I don't know, but the first ones will likely ship in a few weeks.

I work for Apple in Cupertino and I personally guarantee that the G5s will start shipping this month. I am not getting this from anyone else; I know it firsthand.

Of course, if you have not already placed your order then you will not be one of the people receiving a G5 this month.

Sales have been phenomenal; especially on the dual 2Ghz. We will be shipping systems out as fast as we can, but it will take a little while to catch up with the initial demand. If you order a Dual 2Ghz model today, it is possible that you will not receive your system until October, but other people who placed orders weeks ago will start receiving their dual 2Ghz G5 systems this month.

People aren't complaining because Apple pre-announces their products. h***, they could preannounce a year in advance and it would be even healthier -- that's called a roadmap.

What the real problem here is is that Apple _announces_ products, benchmarks them against other currently available and shipping products, advertises them like they're already shipping, pre-sells them and then still misses their shipping dates months later...

it's a sad pattern for the company that needs to change.

Why I Submitted the Story

I can't believe the comments I have read about my original news that I submitted to MacNN. The only reason I submitted it to MacNN was because I didn't want people to purchase a $3000 system from CompUSA expecting it to ship on August 5th (which is what it says on their site). I was trying to point out a perfect example of misleading merchadising. The site says expected ship date is August 5th, which is not true. I hope it prevents someone from purchasing it and being disappointed when they don't receive it until September or later. All other comments by others are misguided and inappropriate--Matt

any student id? do they check these things or do they just accept the id as fact? I graduated in the summer, ya think they'll still take my id?

Dual G5 shipment dates

Called Apple: New orders on the Apple websight quote 6-7 weeks shipping, but they are standing by their August quoted ship date for orders that were placed early.

What's with people, anyway. Apple hasn't slipped yet on this ship date, and people are already all over them about missing it. They announced they'd be shipping at the end of August. Guess what, its Aug 1 now. Apple has a whole month still to get these out, and people are already bitching because somehow they're "late".

Actually, other than the 2 major distribution chains in the USA, you CAN'T get closer to Apple than MacMall. They are the country's biggest retailer. Period. My source at MacMall is very high up. In fact he's the kind of guy who has lunch with Apple people almost weekly. When I said October, I wasn't complaining or trying to act cool because I have a good "connection". I was simply letting you know that you better not hold your breath. Seriously, quit. Your turning purple.

Who the h*** would buy a Mac from CompUSA?!?

You would pay retail price or higher, plus sales tax.

Just call up a catalog company, such as CDW or Mac Connection and get a decent discount and not pay sales tax.

The savings in sales tax alone would allow you to by a game, software, more RAM, or a cheap printer.

You say CompUSA is c***... but yet you and others that complain of CompUSA, Fry's, MicroCenter, etc. are the reason they can't offer you games, software, more ram, and various other Mac centric items in-store.

You have voted to not support your local reseller, for what? Free Shipping? (that's not instant gradification!)
No Sales Tax? (Did you pay by Credit Card? did you compare your interest rate with CompUSA's 6/12/18 month no interest?)

Do you complain when you shop in a hurry at your local reseller about how why can't you carry more products like MacMall, CDW, Mac Connection?

You get what you ask for by voting with your pay check. Self serving isn't it! Don't blame the local reseller, but blame yourself! Even better, don't comment on what you can't justify from what you didn't provide support for yourself!

Dude,

I was able to buy just about everything from my local CompUSA for personal and my business needs thanks to their Business Sales Center.

I even ordered items that shipped direct at same or better discounts when compared to MicroWarehouse. Their in-store Business Sales center offers the Mac user or any user for that fact... the ability to special order just about any item I use to buy online from CDW or MacMall, really!

I win, my local reseller wins... heck the AppleShop keeps getting better. This has to be better that constantly running up and down local reseller shops just to find I would go online to get what we needed. c***, whatever Dude! Maybe you should just get a Dell at Dell.com with a cheaper price on the IPOD. LOL

Come on now...

Apple announced the product and benchmarked against available products...what do you expect them to benchmark against? They cannot benchmark against future competing products that have not been released yet.

Apple has never advertised G5s as if they were already shipping. Apple has said all along that G5s would not start shipping until late August. It is absolutely absurd for you to say otherwise.

What is wrong with allowing pre-orders? It would be utterly stupid for Apple to not accept pre-orders.

Last but not least, what is the deal with your claim that Apple misses ship dates by months? When has Apple ever missed a ship date by months? Can you even name the last product that Apple failed to get out on schedule?

There was a lot of whining about alleged delays of the 17" Powerbooks, but the truth is that the 17" Powerbooks started shipping exactly when Apple said that they would.

Saving on sales tax??

Umm considering that is illegal in most states. They aren't charging you the sales tax, but most states still require you pay sales tax at the state level. In Massachusetts, line 33 on the state form, it asks if you bought anything that you didn't pay state tax on. It's called the "Use Tax" if you plan on USING it in Mass, you pay tax on it, period. Most mail order companies won't charge you tax if they don't have a store in your state, which is fine, but that doesn't mean you don't need to pay that tax when tax season rolls around. Remember it is a felony to lie on your tax forms when it asks if you bought something and didn't pay tax.

Well I have seen some kick @(#$ deals go out of CompUSA's. I don't know many excellent deals on the new G5's. Who would be stupid enough to give stuff away when they are going to be so hot, you won't be able to keep them in stock selling them at full price. I bet there will be people that are the first to get them, and resell them at a profit on eBay!
Mail order has their downfalls. Mandatory install fees. Free shipping usually means 3-10 days on the shipping. Machine defective out of the box, BAH, you deal with Apple on getting it repaired, and rightfully so.
